QUEENSTOWN NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) QTJEBNSTGWN, May 20. THE WEATHER. - The weather during the week has been rather broken, but the change from the long dry spell was not unwelcome. In mid-week we had heavy rain, which completely dispelled our fears regarding a further curtailment of electric light and power. Since then we have had a day or two of bright sunshine; on others, scattered showers, with colder temperatures. A certain amount of snow has fallen on the ranges, but it is unlikely* to lie long if conditions are no colder than they are at present. The readings taken at the' local meteorological station for the seven days ended May 18 are:—

RUGBY FOOTBALL. On Saturday afternoon the Arrowtowo and Queenstown juniors met on the local recreation ground, when the 'home team scored a win over their opponents, 8 to nil. Mr J. Todd was referee. The second senior match of the season was played subsequent to the junioTs' curtain-raiser, Jhe honours coming to the local fifteen, 6—5. The feature of the plajrwas the work of the forwards. Mr D. Neighbouring clubs are being invited to send entries for this annual event, which in the past haa beenvery successful The links have benefited tremendously by the fine rain of last week, while a lot.of work has been put into.the greens by the,Bpecial committee whose charge they, have been made. RIFLE SHOOTING. The final shoot of the Queenstown section of the Wakatipu Defence Rifle Club took place on the range oh Saturday afternoon, when there was a good muster of members. A dull sky and poor light accounted for scores rather under average in some instances. Thev were as follow:

'Tie generosity of several riflemen and townspeople resulted in each shootiet receiving a prize. The donors of trophies were:—Messrs H. Mackenzie and. Sons. A. Simson, P. Reid, F. Padget, R. N. Two competitions were held on match day (Wednesday) by the Wakatipu Gun Club, both being 6-bird matches. Mr Linton Mann won the first and Mr J. Wiggins, an enthusiast from Bournemouth (England), the second, each securing five out of six clays. To-morrow there will be a tryout at skeet shooting., SALVATION ARMY. The first of a series of cake and produce sales under the auspices of the local Salvation Army Corps was held in the Army Hall on Wednesday afternoon, when satis-, factory business was done. In the evening a short entertainment- and coffee supper took place, the proceeds from which helped to augment the day's takings, which are to be devoted to the annual Selfdenial Fund. OBITUARY. Mr Edward Bauman. a very old resident of Cardrona, died in the Lake County Hospital during the week. Deceased had reached the great age of 90 years, and he had lived at Cardrona fo» over 50 years, haying: engaged in mining in that once-famous field. PERSONAL. Dr G.. H. M'Cafferty, of Brisbane, visited Queenstown during the week. The Rev. L. D. C. Groves, assistant to the Rev..Mr Paddison at Holy Trinity Church, Gore, and his bride are in Queens-, town on their honeymoon. Mrs A. A. Gellatly and Miss Gellatly, of Wellington, have been visiting Wakatipu; Mr and Mrs Bruce Rice, other Wellington people, left this morning after spending a week here. j Mr Wragge, son of the late Clement L. Wragge. F.R.G.S., F.R.M.S., spent last week in Queenstown. He and his wife are Brisbane visitors. Mr A. F. Hawke,. M.L.C., and Mrs ; Hawke, Invercargil], are spending a few days., at Cheir Queenstown house. Western , terrace. Mr Ray Romans returned last night to Arrowtown after spending a couple •of years in Australia, latterly in Queensland. Constable Dunn, the local police officer, is on his annual holiday leave. Constable Pearce, of Arrowtown, is relieving. Mr J. M'Beath Gillanders, inspector of machinery, Invercargill, arrived in Queenstown last night on departmental business. Mrs W. P. Thorn and Mrs C. A. Thorn, of Mataura, have come up for a short stay in the bungalow which Mr W. P. Thorn has just built on the Terrace at the head of Ballarat street. Mr Chaston, a tea planter, who has come from Assam on furlough, is visiting Queenstown, in company with his two daughters. This is Mr Chaston's first visit to the Dominion. Mr and Mrs J. W. Smith, of Invercargill, and their family are spending the school vacation here. Mr and Mrs N. Hyndman have brought their family from Invercargill for the holidays. They are in the bungalow they built a few months ago in Hallenstein street. Professor and Mrs Hewitson are resting in Queenstown in their house in Melbourne street.

Mr R. D. Newth, manager of the Public Trust at Invercargill, and his wife and family have furnished house here for the school vacation-

Mr T. B. MKinlay, Queenstown, will be ■taking his departure shortly to Geraldine, where he has acquired land. Miss Mary Salmdnd, of the staff of the Presbyterian, Women’s Training College, Dunedin, came home on Saturday night for the vacation. . Miss M, ,A. Pasco, who has been spending some months in Dunedin for health reasons, returned to Queensfown on Saturday night. ■ Miss Fbinn, of Dunedin, has come to Queenstown for a month. Mrs C. A. Gray and Miss Birch are Riverton visitors in Queenstown. Mr H. C. Romans, organising teacher for the Southland Education Board, is spending the term holidays with his parents at Arrowtown, : Mies Warburton, an English exchange teacher from Manchester, who is on the staff of the Karori. School, Wellington, came through from Mount Gook during the week and spent a few days in Queenstown. She leaves for Dunedin to-mor-row. Miss. Ora Saunders, sister in charge of the Nightingale ward at . the Dunedin Hospital, has been here for a week on holiday leave. Miss M'Donald, of the teaching staff of St. Hilda’s College, Dunedin, arrived here last _ night on her way to Walter Peak Station, where she is the guest of Major and Mrs P. Mackenzie. Mr and Mrs Norman Hall paid a short visit to Dunedin during the week, returning here on Saturday. Mrs Wilson Wallace and two of her children are visiting Dunedin and Invercargill. Mrs King and Miss Sim (Anderson's Bay), Misses Sincock and Tyrell, and the Missses Brown (2) are amongst recent visitors from Dunedin.
