THE IDEAL HUSBAND.

LONDON GIRLS’ DESIRES. “PLAIN MAN EVERY TIME.” "We do not want handsome men!” J-his was the unanimous reply of London girls when they were asked recently by a Sunday Chronicle representative what qualities they wanted most in the man of their choice. “The real reason,” said Mias B. Atkinson, secretary to a London solicitor, “is that the modern girl is now alive to the fact that good looks do not imply good character. We are not nearly so prone to fall' for the dashing, debonair young sheiks who seemed to be all tbe rage not so long ago. “ Good looks, we know, often go hand in hand with the most undesirable characteristics. Personally, give me the plain man every time—the man who is hardworking, honest and with a broad outlook on life. He must be able to take life seriously, but not too seriously; he must know how to play as well ns how to work.” Here are a few of the opinions given;—A typist: First and foremost, a man must have courage. We will often turn a blind eye to all sorts of shortcomings in a man—we don’t expect the poor fellow to he a paragon—but cowardice, never! Looks are immaterial. Not infrequently good looks are a man’s only asset. We are not so “mushy” as to fail in love with tbe first handsome man that comes along. My partner will have to be ambitious, young, full of life, with a good standard of morals and honour. Preferably, he should have enough pride in his appearance to dress decently, but spare me from the foppish man! A kinema attendant: Give me a man with a sense of humour every time. There is so miicb misery and strife in the world at present that in my opinion the man who can see tbe bright side of things and who still keeps smiling in the face of adversity is entitled to the most respect in this world. Of course, he must be honest and reliable, moderately intellectual, and interested in life. And, since he need not be rich, it is essential that he should be of a sociable disposition, because a middle-class life without friends or occasional company would be very dull, A sportswoman: The best type of maa —and the sort that would make the best husband—is naturally the normal, healthy man. The best partner, I consider, is tbe sportsman. He is strong, healthy., mentally and physically upright, fond of the open air and vigorous sport. Ifc knows how to hold his own in the world a pd 18 n °f easily dispirited, and knows at the same time how to enjoy the more refined pleasures of life.
