DEFERRED PAYMENT SYSTEM

"They pay while they ride, and apparently a lot of them ride into this court,” said Mr Justice Adams in the Supreme Court to-day in dealing with a young man who was said to have been tempted to dishonesty when he became in arrears over the payments on a motor cycle. Mr C. S. Thomas said that the case was one of those frequent instances in which a young man had brought a motor cycle on time payment. When passing sentence on the young man his Honor said that the probation officer had again drawn attention to the dangers associated with the deferred payment system which enabled young people to enter into heavy obligations after small payments on bicycles, motor cycles,* cars and other goods. They entered into contracts that 99 out of 100 of them did not understand, and bound themselves to heavy financial engagements which ultimately might bring them before the court. His Honour would not. say more than that a considerable responsibility rested on traders to whom young people applied for expensive articles for which they could not pay on the time payment system.
