Commenting on the Parnell by-elec-tion, the Auckland Star, which supports the Government, says; “We have shown that the United Party has done far more than its opponents .admit to make up for. the lethargy of its predecessors; but we have never contended that it has done all it might. Parnell has applied the spur, and we hope the horse will respond. The party should ask itself, among other ' things, how far the continued illness of the Prime Minister and his long absence from Wellington may have influenced yesterday’s voting.” CABINET MEETING IN ROTORUA.
