Alfred Randolph Barton, aged 27 a surveyor, walked into the detective office ou May 1 and informed the police that he had been issuing valueless cheques. Hhe was charged , to-day with issuincheques valued at £56 10s. and was granted two years’ probation. Ho explained that lie came to Auekland to enfer a position, but was disappointed, and went on a drinking bout. - HASTINGS, May 8. A seven-roomed residence adjoining lona College. Havelock North, owned and occupied by Mr SeUvyn Averill, was burnt to the ground at 9 o’clock last night. The occupants were absent, spending the evening with friends, and nothing was saved. The. building was a mass of flames before the lire was discovered by neighbours. • CHRISTCHURCH. May 8. As > the outcome of a . disturbance in Hereford street on April 11, Sydney Fourmci\ .a mfembef of the unemployed, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court charged with behaving in •a 5 threatening manner. A. pica of not guilty was entered. A witness named. Pa Infer (al#o unemployed) alleged that-he had been kicked by Fournier, .who was convicted and ordered to conic up for sentence when called upon.
