NEW ZEALAND BOXING COUNCIL.
TROWERN-MORGAN EPISODE. THE REFEREE BLAMED. (Peb United PrSbs Association.) WELLINGTON, May ■ 8. Through refusing to box yhen ordered to do so by the referee in his contest with Eeg. Tcowern at Gisborne on February 14 last, Ted Morgan, of Wellington, lost the fight. “ The appeal must be disallowed,” said the .Boxing Council. “We would like to add that the whole matter is regretableu . It is impossible to deny that an injustice would. probably have been done to whichever contestant lost the fight after the initial mistake was made. For this we hold the referee entirely to blame. Unfortunately we have no power to do anything-other than give a decision under the rules.” The initial mistake referred to was that Trowern was allowed out of the ring, remaining out for several minutes. A special meeting of the council will be held on Monday next to consider the position respecting the action of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing ■ Association in withholding Morgan’s end of the purse in his contest with Lou Bloom on April 11 last, in which Morgan was disqualified.
According to the annual report of the Blackburn Chamber of Trade, there are some places in Lancashire where there is one shop fo r every 15 people, and it is suggested that local authorities should be “given powers to prevent this regrettable overlapping by the establishment of shopping zones,” This problem, which will probably .be discussed' further in the near future, js not confined to Lancashire. It exists all over the country, especially in the new “ suburbs " and “ dorHjjtory ” towns which are growing round ?} Hig cities. In ‘ many of these, the shops are far in excess of the real requirements of the inhabitants, many of whom, in any case, prefer to shop at the big city stores.
