QUEENSTOWN NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN. May 7. THE WEATHER. , The weather is glorious at present. We are now getting a maximum of sunshine, with cloudless skies and an absence of wind. The early mornings and evenings are becoming frosty, but that is to be expected in the month of May. The long dry spell has been proving' rather embarrassing in regard to our hydro-electric light and cower supply. The water in the dam has been steadily falling and it is only by cutting off light and power from 11.30 p.m. or. midnight till 6 a.m. tlist th© council has kept the Supply of electric current going during the hours when it is most 'needed. Meantime, the town water supply has been drawn entirely from the New 1 Brewery Creek scheme. The introduction of this a few months ago has proved very timely. METEOROLOGICAL. The readings taken at the Queenstown meteorological station for the seven days ended May 4, are;

For the first four months of last year the rainfall was 10.86 inches. GOLF. During the week most of the members of the local Golf Club have been availing themselves of the opportunity of taking lessons from Mr L. Reilly, the Central Otago coach. Last night his season here was brought to a close with a lecture in the' County Chambers, when he gave a resume of his instruction, and a review of his observations on the style and faults of players. • ■ A record for the Wakatipu links was made last Wednesday by Mr A, H. Cooke, last season’s champion, who made the round of 18 holes in 73. This is regarded as a remarkable score considering the condition of the links at the present time. i In the ladies’ section Mrs William Elliot won the club button on Saturday with 98—18—80. Mrs J. Hannan and Mrs G. V. Wilkinson were runners-up with 106 —25 —81 each. OUTBOARD MOTOR RACING. The adjourned meeting of those interested in the staging of a speed boat carnival on Lake Wakatipu was held during the week. As it was considered that the question of finance was one of the most important to be considered, it was decided that a canvass be made of the town for promises of support. A committee of three was appointed to undertake this, and it was completed a day or so ago. The report will be submitted to a further meeting at an early date. It is understood that the support promised was most encouraging. If it should be found inadvisable to hold the carnival on the King’s birthday, it is probable that the regatta next Easter time may be extended to two days in order to include more speed boats events. This would possibly meet the convenience of outboard motor boat owners in Otago and Southland. ST. PETER’S CHURCH. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Peter’s was held in the parish hall on Wednesday evening, the Rev. W. W Powell presiding. The report submitted by the church officers disclosed a satisfactory condition of affairs and a distinct improvement in the finances. ’ The debt under which the church laboured last year was considerably reduced, while a fairly substantial sum was paid off the parish car. ; The vicar’s report comprised a comprehensive review of the activities of the several branches of the church’s work, from which it was gathered that the interest was well maintained. Thanks were returned to the lay readers (Dr W. A. Anderson and Mr W. D„ Warren), to the collectors and lady in charge of the altar adornment and church decoration (Miss Earland). to the Sunday school superintendent (Mr Lloyd), the members of the Ladies’ and Girls’ Sewing Guilds, and. other church workers. the services of Mr C. H. M'Kay, Queenstown, as borough solicitor. Grs D. F. Murchison and E. J. Lowen, the two recently-elected councillors, were appointed to fill the positions on the committee left vacant by the resignations of Cra Gilkison and St. Omer. , It was resolved to have the interiors of the reading room and library re-caici-mined and the woodwork repainted. As the outcome of some discussion on the methods employed in the building of the now breakwater it was decided that the district engineer, Public Works Department, be'interviewed on the occasion of his next visit to Queenstown. The Special Committee set up to report on improvements to the waterfront submitted the result of its investigations and its interviews with property owners in the locality. The council has in view the possibilites of acquiring the land abutting on the foreshore and setting it out as a public reserve. It has been recognised that, the entrance to the town is an eyesore by reason of the dilapidated buildings which meet the gaze of visitors upon their arrival in the town by steamer. Further, certain other properties. abutting on the breakwater are partly occupying what is known as the breakwater endowment. It is desired to terminate, all these leases and reserve the land, so that improvements may be carried out. The committee's report was a fairly favourable one in regard to the terras of the property owners approached, and it is to be forwarded on to the Minister of Internal Affairs, with whom the council has already taken the matter up. GENERAL. The first of the Wakatipu Football Sub-union Cup matches is to be played at' Arrowtown ■ next Saturday afternoon between teams' representing the Arrowtown and Glenorchy Clubs. The subscriptions to the Obstetrical Chair Fund in the Wakatipu district have now reached something over £BO. The Queenstown newspaper (the Lake Wakatipu Mail)' celebrates to-day its sixty-seventh anniversary, having been established on May 6. 1863. in the colourful days of the early gold diggings. Two years afterwards the late Mr W. Warren became the proprietor, and the Mail is still being carried on by members of his family. District sportsmen report good bags from most parts of the district.
