The committee of the Otago Basketball Union met at the Y.W.C.A. rooms on Saturday last, there being present Mr S. G. Macfarlane (in the : chair). Misses M. A. Mackenzie,. Fleming, Logan, Mattmgly, Marslin, Sunderland, Reid, and Knight. The coach of the newly-entered Otago Girls’ High School Club (Miss Garratt) was present by invitation. In anticipation of tire needs when the winter makes play ,on. grass courts impracticable, it was decided to apply at once for permission to use the, George Street and Forbury School courts on the usual terms. It was hoped that one court at the Girls’ High School would be available. It was decided also to put in future two A. Grade matches on at- the union court each Saturday afternoon, and to advertise these, and to charge fid admisthe clubs concerned to be responsible for bate-keepers—those playing second for the first , half, those playing first for the second half. It was hoped by this means to popularise the game with the public, and to make the central court selfsupporting, Further means. to this end were offered by the Training College Club, which undertook the general care of the court in return for permission to use it 011 Thursday afternoons for practice. The secretary of the Oamaru Club wrote regarding the affiliation of Oamaru sub-association.—lt was .decided to reply that Otago Union would be glad to receive North Otago’s affiliation on the payment of the New. Zealand Association fee plus a-nominal levy of ss. The Southland Association’s invitation to send a team to Invercargill on July 26 to play the annual match for the Southland Cup was accepted. The matter, of sending a B Grade team on the same date was held over in the meantime, as was the question of sending a team to the New Zealand tournament; to be held this year at Hastings, The new constitution for the New Zealand Association was briefly .discussed, further consideration , being left to a committee consisting of Misses Mackenzie and Mattingly, Messrs Macfarlane and Roydhouse. The treasurer of the union (Mies Knight) was authorised to open a new Savings Bank’ account for the accident insurance fund. PERSONAL NOTES. Miss Hardy, general secretary of the Dunedin Young Women’s Christian Association, and a newly elected vice-presi-dent of the Otago Basketball Union, has had a. long and very useful connection with girls’ sports, being connected with netball in Melbourne for some time, and having been instrumental in foundlng basketball in Palmerston North Miss C F. Miller, last year a member or the Training College Club, is now secretary (for. the second time) of the basketball * organisation in Oamaru. If Miss Miller can find .time to put as much into the association as she did into her game, the "sport should progress- in . North Otago. Miss Betty Henderson, late of the University and Training College Clubs, is now teaching in Dannevirke, and is doing what she can to’foster the game there. Miss M. A. Mackenzie .will be away from Dunedin during the school vacation Any matter of urgency may, be referred to Miss Mattingly, care Y.W.C.A. Miss Perry, late of the Y.W.C.A. staff, and a keen; supporter of the game, was in communication recently with Miss Mackenzie in" regard'to newspaip'er work for basketball. - THE NEW RULES. The new rules seem’to be giving more trouble than was anticipated. Everyone agrees that the changes made are work mg well, but not all referees are quite familiar with them yet. The following, points have cropped-.up during the week:— (1) What happens. when -the centre throwing off throws the ball out of bounce?. The..ball,is.thrown in by an opponent, at the place-where it crosses the •me- (-2) Is a girl out of bounds if she roaches into the next court to get: the, ball on the ground? No.. A’ player is out of . bounds only when any part of her body touches, any 'part pf‘ the boundary line or the ground outside a boundary. The ball is. out of bounds when it touches any boundary line "or the ground across'a boundary line, or when it is touched by a person or object out 'of bounds. (3) What should the referee dp. in the following case? A player , prevents the ball going _ out by running and batting or scooping it away fromvthe line, but herself continues on and crosses the boundary line. , First, it should be remarked -thatthis is a. foolish piece of play,"the reason being this: .If the player’s own side rgains an advantage the ruling is. an unguarded pass for the other side, while if the other side obtains the advantage it is easy to see that it is best to avoid the practice. ~ LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES. The A Grade games last Saturday were Albany v. Training College, Girls’ High School v. University, and First Church v. University 11. Victories were gained by Albany, University' I, and. First Church. • The first two matches were very good expositions of the game, especially for so early in -the season. Albany’s win of 21 to 12 against College was, in brief, a triumph of combination. . The more experienced but somewhat disorganised University I team did well to beat its agile opponents by 16 to 11. This game was also pretty to watch. In the absence of a report on the third game it can only be said, on hearsay, that it was an enjoyable but somewhat patchy match. In the BI game Albany v. Training Col--lege, Albany was again successful. Outstanding players for the winning team were Misses Burns and Eggers, while College was best served by its captain (Miss A. Crawford) at centre, and its defences, all of whom played very fine games. In the Cl Grade, Triangle I played Tinopai at the Oval. In each team there was good forward play, but - the centre play was somewhat: marred by a tendency to bunch together. At halftime the score was 5 —3 in favour of Tinopai. Miss Hindle, of Triancle showed up ? wel{ in the second half, but Tinopai maintained the upper hand, and ' won by 10. to 7. The Cl game Training College v. Norma] Secondary was of interest because of the newly-entered Normal team. After a most enjoyable game the younger team gained the victory by the unusual score of 13 to 12. It is regrettable (not on the grounds of the result) that this match was not controlled- by th official referee. . In the CII Grade North-East Valley’s “ most junior ” team was thoroughly beaten by College I. Players of merit in the defeated team were Miss Monroe (forward) and the centre. The College centres did well both in attack and defence, with the result that a great deal of .the play was in the third next to College’s goal. Valley needs more combination. and its forwards should have a try at goal oftener. CORRESPONDENCE. A correspondent signing herself “Anxious ’’ writes as follows, but gives no indication of where the event of which she writes happened, or why she wants to know. As. however, such things have been known to occur in years gone by, wo shall publish thenote in full: —“Dear ‘Alpha,’—ls it possible for a referee to control a frame by standing or walking along the side line? Further, should a referee talk to anyone, \timekceper, or anybody else, during the game? Do you not think the referee should follow the game closely, and blow the whistle at once when a rule is broken? How can she see goals from halfway? ’’—The answer is:—Certainly a referee should follow closely, act promptly, watch throws carefully, and generally concentrate all her energies on her job. Personally. I find refereeing an exacting task, and would not think of trying to do it with an overcoat and walking shoes on
