THE OCTAGON.

TO THE EDITOR. ' , Sl ",- 1 r <-ad in your journal some tuouths ago that the old iron fence round the Octagon was to be taken down at the end or the financial year, March 31, 1930, and 1 am surprised, on my return visit this month, to find the place in an even vvorse condition than last year. We read about motor clubs and associations objecting to advertising signs on roads, and crossroads; but what do we see in tire Octagon but hoardings displaying advertisements for entertainments, and the old seats (two), occupied by men, while women with children waiting for trams have to stand. I think there have been enough stones taken out of the Leith in the last flood to build a beautiful rockery round the Octagon at very little cost, which would keep some of the unemployed engaged for a few weeks at least. After seeing What was done in isymonds street, Auckland, and in othvr parts_ of that city with rockeries, T am surprised to see such a beautiful spot, in the heart of the city of Dunedin, spoiled by advertising signs, and with two seats where there should be at least a dozen.—l am, etc., > Improvement.
