(Received May 6, at 9 p.m.)' The opinion at Newcastle is that the coal strike will be over in a few days. A rank and file conference will be- held there on Thursday, when it is expected that the leaders will advise the miners to accept the owners’ terms, subject to guarantees of no victimisation and the preservation of seniority rights. Mr R. James, a member of the Federal Parliament, caused a stir in i May Day speech, when he frankly admitted tha‘ the miners were beaten. He added that it was very disagreeable to have to say so.
