It nas been for a long period increasingly evident that the importing of foreign animals into a virgin country was- contrary to the best welfare of New Zealand, It w amazing, seeing what intelligent minds haye been at the head of this country a affairs, that such a deplorable condition now prevails. Of course, it.is easy to be wise after the event. But an ordinary mind might' have guessed that the incursion of a horde of various creatures, such as red deer and wapiti (outstanding glaring instances) into a com- , paratively small country would inevitably bring ruin. An ocular demonstration npon-a small scale of what the acclimatisation idea has brought about is all too visible in this very city. It is the painful sight of a strayed horse's tracks in land where the Training College authorities are making a laudable effort to rear a collection of native treeß. The thoughtless thwarting of such good work must be very discouraging to all concerned. All credit to the Trades and Labour Council, and to all who do what they can to promote improvement.—l am, etc., .; ■ ■■ ~ J. D. B.
