CITY POLICE COURT.
♦ Tuesday. May 6. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew. S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Charged with drunkenness, a first offender was fined 20s. in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, A REMAND GRANTED. Henry. Matthews was charged with using indecent language at Glenoamaru, and on the application of Senior Sergeant Quartcrmain was remanded to appear at Balclutha on Friday, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £2O and one surety of a like amount. RESISTING ARREST. Joseph Sutherland pleaded guilty to fighting in a public place, and, together with Robert Duncan, he entered ,a plea of guilty on a charge of resisting Constable Garnan while in the execution of his duty.—Mr White represented both the accused. —Senior Sergeant Quartermain said that at 5.10 p.m. on the previous day Constable Garnan found the accused fighting with another man in Maclaggan street. He went to arrest the accused, who resisted, whereupon the constable sent a boy on a bicycle to bring assistance. The accused Duncan attempted to stop thd boy, who. however, got away, and Duncan then went back and attempted to help Sutherland.—Mr White said that both of the accused had been drinking, and whilst- they had resisted the constable, they had not been violent. If a heavy penalty were imposed on Sutherland, l his wife and children would suffer, and if he were given another chance, he would take out a prohibition order against himself —Sutherland was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment on the charge of fighting, and he and Duncan were each fined £2. in default seven days’ imprisonment for resisting the constable; Sutherland being ordered to take out a prohibition order against himself.
