With characteristic enterprise the company decided to erect works so as to secure the payment of this bonus. A small acid, unit was duly completed, and payment,,of the bonus named was secured to the company. In the subsequent three or four years the Burnside works were extended to enable the manufacture- of artificial manures. This was the beginning of the company's interest ln the fertiliser trade, of New Zealand, which has since grown to very large pro- . portions. , f The company has at /the present time Jour fully-equipped modern fertiliser works in operation, one each at Auckland, Wanganui, and Christchurch, and • the new works at Burnside, which are ; uow completed and in full operation. The . Burnside works have been, remodelled on a very large scale, and/are thoroughly up i «>. date in every respect. The. plant is driven throughout by and all tne latest labour-saving devices.have been installed. The works, which have a total capacity of from 60,000 to 60,000 tons per annum, enable the company to turn out the highest grade product in the best possible condition for use l>y the formers ' at a minimum cost.
