An important local , industry in tin* shape of the manufacture of varnishes, paints, etc., is carried on by Messrs Smith* and Smith in Dunedin. Th;» work was first undertaken about 30 years ago. but for a long time it was carried on in a small way, and it is only in the last nine years or so that it has developed to the gratily ing position which it now occupies, the old idea that imported varnishes and paints must be superior to those made in this country has been slowly but surely overcome. Messrs Smith and Smith determined to erect an up-to-date factory, specially designed for the work required ami to secure a staff of experts tiom the Oie Country to take charge of the operations The result is that to-day in a substan tially-built factory, the firm is turning out varnishes and paints which are m certain respects superior to anything nn ported, 'flic local products have been thoroughly tested by years of exposure to all kinds of weather and have proved that the claims made as to their qualiU have been fully substantiated. Very complete stocks of the material.required in the painting, paperhanging and house decorating line are -nrried in the firm’s centrally-situated warehouses in Dunedin. Christchurch.
