RACING NEWS. By Sentinel, -- ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. - Sportsman.—(l) Sasanoff won the New Zealand- Cup in 1918. The race was run’ on a Monday. (2) He won the Melbourne Cup of 1916, which was cun. on a, Saturday. . Nominations for the D.J.C. winter meet-* uig are due on Friday! ■ , At Wingatui yesterday morning a num- . oar of horses were worked on the outside of the grass * training track. .Two of the first to "appear were. Circulation and Nedda, and they got to the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 2-Ssec, with the former always going the better of.the pair. v Al Jolson, who has improved a lot covered four furlongs in 52 2-ssec. He easily beat Mustn’t Miss. Camisader went the last seven furlongs 'of a circuit in Imin 35sec, without being pushed. Stealth sprinted four furlongs in S3seo. • He is an unlikely starter at the Southland meeting. Evening, .and Sudden- Storm ran sixfurlongs in Imin 23sec, with the former ■ways going the better. • ;iv . £f ote did a circuit at little better than half pace. ' Black Duke easily held Captain’s Gift at the end of five furlongs- iu 67 2-sseo. Ihe former looks well. 1 Salmo Salar was going better -than Ballance at the end.of five furlongs in Imin lOsec. j Good Gift and Glenrowan sprinted home • c in ß ! l kree fuflohgs of a good half-mile “3° l*sseo, the latter going the better at the finish. . . T? ra £9 na was slow in finding his feet fa theGlaanavifa Hack Handicap at Amberley on Saturday, and tailed the field throughout. This brother to'Paquito will probably not be . seen: to advantage until next season. ‘ ‘ , Town Bird. has been showing capability in his schooling work over the obstacles, and has been nominated for the Eaitoko and Rata Hurdles at the' Wanganui meet/Two seasons ago Town- Bird scored <>n that course in a six-furlong event, and run prominently this time. ' v oojgele did not show much’of his usual brilliancy in the Novice Stakes at Am. borlcy on Saturday,, and, although gaming third money, ,he- had no chance with the dividend payers. -Since racing at the Avondale Jockey Uabai autumn meeting, Eager Rose has been treated to a* dose of physic, and she ie at present on the easy list.’ Eager Rose’s programme for the next few months is at present indefinite, and it has not yet been decided whether she will be raced at the Auckland winter meeting, where she has been-nominated for the leading flat races. A. Kemp has an idea of baking her to Sydney ip the-winter, although he has not decided on any definite- plan - of campaign. Another trip to Sydney .With a team-of horses is to he undertakenby J. T. Jamieson this winter, and he expects to' get ■way early in Juno, (says .‘Vedette®). The constitution of the team he will, take has not yet been determined,"'but; it will" bo a strong one, and will probably include, several yearlings who are being prepared by him for next season’s racing. Although he has not been' favoured with the beqt of luck on his previous trips to Sydney, Jamieson was' successful in winning uie A.J.C. Derby with - Prince Humphrey about two years’ago. This time he might not have anything as good as Prince Humphrey, but He has some promising young horses in, his. stable, and the prospects for the trip" can therefore be regarded- very hopefully. Sportsmanship had much to- do with the parading of The Viscount and Swiftray in the Starky Memorial at Amberley on Saturday, as otherwise a walk-over for Arikiwai would have been recorded (says the .Press). The Viscount was also engaged in the .Amberley Handicap, and, judging: by .ibis good' showing for, the. greater portion or the ,journey- in the big race, he would have had good prospects in the shorter event, Swiftray was intended for the Novice Stakes, and T. Green made the trip from Palmerston North ostensibly to ride him, but .Mr Greenwood elected to alter the arrangements as a ; means of assisting the club. The Viscount’s owner, Mr J. S. Barrett, who has recently suffered a severe illness, was able to bo present at the meeting. At ■ TROTTING. By Sentinel. The Shrew has a tendency to come into favour for the Prince of Wales Handicap, but Carmel still has the; call oyer her. The special train which is bringing northern horses engaged at the Forbury : Park meeting is timed to arriverat 3.49 p.m- to-day.- . ' ; The Auckland reinsman J, Shaw will . handle Native'Prince in his engagement ' this week. • Luck in the running will count for a lot in the, Renown Handicap, but from the 1 mark she is on Fink Sugar will only 1 need to steer clear, of trouble to race prominently. ' Wrackeen fs'a great stayer, but the Wrack four-year-old might find t}ie clis- - tance of the •• Plying Handicap just too , short for her. Judged'by his recent form, Omaha appears to have * trained off. Some horses, however, come right again very quickly. Old 1 Lenamhor looks well, but in the Beach Handicap it looks beyond him to give away ground to such smart pacers as Nelson’s victory. Lady Antrim, and El Direct!. ' 1 Handicaps for the Oamaru Club’s meeting will be declared on Saturday of this week, and acceptances are due- on Tuesday of next week. * Storm Bell has not shown her best form for some time, and she does not appeal from near the back of the Renown Handicap, to be run to-morrow. | C. S. Donald has a big team engaged -at Forbury Park this week, and followers of the stable have reason to be pleased with their prospects, Ellegro is credited with having a fine turn of speed, but apparently he is seldom in the mood to show it. , • ' Grand little trotter though Great Nelson is, he.looks to have an impossible task in the Bayfield Handicap. According to reports from the south. Free Chimes is expected to run well in the Domain Handicap. Logan Hanlon looks well after his recent efforts at Addington, but he does not take the eye in the Flying Handicap. There are too many good ones on the front. The Wyndham trainer, J. Dynes, who has Nelson’s Victory, Fernlee, and Storm Bell engaged at the Forbury Park meeting, arrived from the south yesterday. Included among the brackets that will flgere in to-morrow’s race book are particularly strong ones in Lydia Poynter-and Ulm in the Domain Handicap, Jean M’Elwyn and Sunshower in the Prince of Wales Handicap, and Wilma Dillon and Lingfreld in the Flying Handicap, - ! By his first-rate effort at Addington on Saturday, Native Prince has gained friends for the Prince of Wales Handicap, the main event on the first day of thd Forbury Park meeting, and it will not be in . the 'least surprising to find him disputing the final issue with Carmel, The. Shrew t> atid Jean M'Elwyn (says the' Sun). Native Prince is staying on a lot batter than formerly, but has forfeited none of his brilliance as a result.
