FALL DOWN LIFT WELL. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 5. An inquest was opened by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., into the death of Lewis Bernard Tester (aged 18), who died five lays after he fell 10 feet down a lift svell at a factory at Newmarket. The Young man continued going to his employment until last Friday when he complained of pains in the head. After remaining in bed until Sunday morning he died at his home: The deceased’s mother stated that when her son came home from work last Euesday he said he had had a slight iccident, paving fallen down a lift well He wentso work on Friday afternoon, but said he had a severe headache on Saturday morning, and at 1 p.m. the same day witness called Dr Petit. The deceased remained in bed all Saturday, [n addition to ..the headache the deceased bad complained- of his back since the iccident. Ho died at 7.45 on Sunday morning. The inquest was adjourned sine die. CAR PLUNGES INTO RIVER. DRIVER FATALLY INJURED. (Per United Press Association)) AUCKLAND, May 5. Through his car plunging over a 20£t sank into the Puhoi River to-night, Julian tVilliam Roope, of Stanley Bpy, Auckland, received injuries from which he died I few minutes after being removed from the car. INJURED BY FALL. (Peb United Press Association.) NAPIER, May 5. The superintendent of the Napier Fire Brigade, Mr J. H. Riddell, met with an accident this morning when inspecting a two-storeyed wooden building which had been partly destroyed by fire. Mr Riddeli. was on the much-damaged first floor when he fell through to the concrete floor below. He was removed to the hospital, where it was ascertained that he had suffered a Severe scalp wound and painful body bruises, Mr Riddeli did not lose consciousness, and his condition to-night is reported to be satisfactory. The skull is not thought to be fractured, but this will not be definitely known until after an X-ray examination to-morrow.

WOMAN THROWN FROM HORSE. (Per United Press Association.) HASTINGS) May 5. While following the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meet at Mangatahi on Saturday, Mrs Gerald Gladstone, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Goring Johnstone, of Tamumu station, was thrown from her horse and was picked up unconscious, with injuries to her head. She was taken to the hospital, and to-day was reported to be improving. CROSSING KEEPER ‘INJURED, '(Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. H. M'Grath, an elderly man engaged as a crossing keeper, received severe bruises through being knocked down by a motor cyclist at the Colombo street crossing on Saturday evening, A race train from Amberley had just crossed, when the motor cyclist, who was going south, crossed the lines and knocked the keeper down. CROSSING KEEPER KILLED.* (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. A verdict that death was due to his being accidentally run over by an electric railway train while engaged in his duties as railway crossing keeper at Waltham road was returned by the coroner, Mr E. D, Mosley, S.M., at the inquest to-day into the death of Arthur William Bright. The evidence was that a motor cyclist, still unknown, was approaching, the crossing against Bright’s signal. Bright went on the track to stop him and was struck by the oncoming train. The motor cyclist got over the line safely. . 1
