(Received May‘s, at's-5 p.m.) A total of 1028 prominent economists, who are members of Hie . American. Economic Association,' and •representatives of 179 a statement urging Congress to reject the increased lariffp, or President" Hoover to veto them if Congress passes the Bill. “We are. convinced that, increased restrictiye . duties are;' a, mistake. They would operate generally to increase prices, thereby encouraging concerns with higher costs to undertake production, thus compelling the consumer to subsidise waste and inefficiency in industry.” It is stated .that farmers-would suffer doubly, and export trade in . general would suffer. American manufacturers did not need higher tariffs, and few could hope to gain from such a change.
