NEW ERA FOR AUSTRIA

1 COMMENT BY THE TIMES. * * REPARATION BURDEN LIFTED. (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.) ? (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY. May 8. The Times, in a leading article, says that a. new era may be said to have begun for the Austrian Republic with the succcsful conclusion of the Hague negotiations, and of those just ended in Paris. Above all, the burden of the indefinite laibilities for ■ reparation payments has been definitely removed from her shoulders. The Times recalls that towards the end of last year Mr Henderson made observations in Parliament about the semi-mili-tary associations which hampered the constitutional development of Austria, and stated that the creditor countries, which had guaranteed the League loan to Austria, of whom Great Britain was one of the chief, could not be unmindful of the bearing the internal disturbances had upon the contingent liabilities of foreign taxpayers. Doubtless, it says, Dr Schober has been able partly to reassure the British Government on this point. THE CHANCELLOR IN LONDON. RECEIVED BY THE KING. RUGBY, May 3. Dr Schober, the Austrian Chancellor, had a long talk with the King when he was received by his Majesty at Windsor Castle to-day. He was presented' also to the Queen. This is the first official visit of an Austrian statesman to Windsor since the war.

Dr Schober left London in the afternoon for Vienna. Among those. on the platform at Victoria station were Mr Arthur Henderson (Foreign Secretary), and Mr Robert Vansittart (Permanent Under-secretary for Foreign Affairs). To the press representatives, the Chancellor was enthusiastic about his welcome by the King and Queen, and expressed great satisfaction with the reception accorded to him in official circles. He was specially gratified with the British newspaper articles appreciative of his work as'the political leader of Austria, being particularly impressed by the term " New Austria” which was frequently used by the writers. ,
