MOTOR BOAT HURDLING

LONDON, ■ May A. • Mr John Miller, the well-known motor boat racer and originator of “ motor hurdling,” which he was endeavouring to popularise in Britain, was killed. in the presence nf his wife, his two daughters, his brother, and hundreds of spectators at St. Helena. Miller had a floating hurdle composed of planks, at’ which he rushed his speed boat, aiming to force the boat up prior to shooting over the, obstacle.’ The onlookers begged Miller not ■to attempt the feat owing to the danger. Miller dashed at the hurdle at terrific speed, and caused the boat to leap six feet into the air. A terrific explosion followed, and ‘Miller collapsed, terribly injured in the head by fragments of the flywheel, which flew off owing to the engine racing. Miller, having failed to shut off while the boat was in mid air.
