ST. KILDA BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Bt. Kilda Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor {Mr J. Beattie) presiding. There were also present Ore C. Conn, J. Fleming, T. D. B, Roy, F. 0. Gillam, G. Glue, W. G. Baird, E, Longworth, A. Smiley, H. H, Leary, and R. Tclfer. CORRESPONDENCE. Messrs Wren and Co. applied for a 'permit to paint a sign on the wall and doorway of a shop in the borough.— Cr Smiley pointed out that the work had already been completed, and moved: “That the permit be granted, hut that the applicants be warned that no further work of a like nature be commenced without a permit from the council.”— The motion was seconded by Cr Baird, and carried. Mr T, Drain, secretary of the Tainui Progress League, wrote pointing out that since the name-plate had been removed from the corner of Islington street, this street and Cranley street were to all intents and purposes one continuous street, and that strangers to the district had considerable difficulty in distinguishing one street from the other. The writer asked that the nameplate he replaced.—lt was decided that a plate be placed designating Islington street, and that the league be advised to approach the City Council .in regard to a name-plate for Cranley street. Mr Drain also wrote drawing attention to the water plug at the corner of Bowen and Islington streets, which, in its present position, was dangerous to pedestrians—lt was decided that the foreman be instructed to inspect this and other plugs qnd report. GENERAL. The secretary of the St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society wrote requesting a rebate on accounts due to the society by the council.~Cr Smiley said that the society was doing a great deal of work for the beach, and thus helping to improve the precincts of the borough. He moved; “That the amount of the accounts be reduced by 60 per cent.”— Cr Longworth seconded the motion.— Cr Roy moved as an amendment: "That a reduction of 20 per cent, be allowed.” —The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion was carried. The secretary of the Otago Rugby Football Union wrote offering £lO for the use of Culling Park for the" ensuing season, and £5 for the use of Alexandra Park, conditional on the v council’s tarsealing plant being removed from the latter ground.—The chairman of the Works Committee,_ Cr Telfer, ' pointed out that the council had no other place to put the plant at present, and suggested therefore that the Rugby Union’s offer in regard to Alexandra Park be refused.—Cr Longworth considered it was about time the Works Committee found a place for the plant. Ho did not consider it fair that the park should be monopolised in this manner.—lt was decided that the matter be referred to the Works Committee, which should be empowered to go into the question of finding a nuitablo site to store the plant, and t!> the Rugby Union be notified that & soon as the plant could be shifted that it could use the park on' the terms mentioned. WATER CONSUMPTION. The town clerk reported tha't the water consumption for the 13 days ended at noon yesterday was 3,684,000 gallons at a cost of £92 2s, compared with £lO9 7s 6d for the previous two- weeks. The total cost for the four weeks ended yesterday was £2Ol 9s 6d, compared with £221 19s 6d for the previous month,— Noted. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman {Mr J. Clyma) reported as follows on the work done during the month of April:—Penetration and sealiqg 28 chains. Richardson street, patching 72 chains \ ictoria road, patching bad potholes in streets 1 through the borough, also footpaths where required. Mixing 20 yards asphalt, making concrete blocks, 12 sets, crossing placed on No. 17, Queen’s Drive, No. 14, Forbury crescent, No. 91, Queen’s Drive, No. 7, Grey street. No. 72/ Grove street, ? u £>S® s ted that for the ensuing fortnight the following work be carried °nt: Patching streets where required, mixing asphalt,- making concrete blocks, placing crossings, etc. "He also suggested that instead of purchasing 150 drums of tar the council confine the purchase to 100 drums, 20 of which have been delivered, and that it treat its requirements with supertax- (otherwise pitch, with its own plant.
