RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union Was heldlaat night. The president (Mr H. Harris) occupied the chair. A letter was received from the New Zealand Union agreeing to admit school children, in charge of teachers, to the matches against the British team for the sum of 6d each. A letter was received from the New Zealand Union stating that the Management Committee had decided that “ a fair catch can only be allowed to a player who has both .feet on'the ground, and claims the fair catch. by making g, heel mark.” The .chairman said it was not -clear whether a man could jump in the air, take the ball, and make his heel mark on landing again on the ground.— After some discussion on the point it was decided to communicate with the New Zealand Union and ask whether the intention was that a player when taking a mark must have both feet on the ground as the catch. A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Union confirming August 13 as the date of its match with* Otago; if Gtago is then the holder of the Ranfurly' Shield, the match to be for the; shield.— The chairman said that Otago would play Southland on August 6, and that Hawke’s Bay could challenge for the shield, if Otago won. on August 7. As the' rules stood, a province could not challenge another province for the shield until the latter possessed it. He did not think their union would offer any objection to a challenge coming from Hawke’s Bay after the match with Southland. " They have, however, to win the shield first.”; remarked the chairman.— It was decided to write to the Hawke’s Bay Union on the lines suggested by the chairman. September 13 was confirmed as the date of the match with North Otago; September 13 h.B the date for the Payne Trophy match, at Dunedin; September 20, for the match against Canterbury, and August 23 for the match against South Canterbury. G. Procter, referee in the match between the Pirates A team and Alhambra second, wrote reporting having ordered off W. Milne, of the Pirates team, for having struck an opponent during the progress of the game.—The referee said that a scrum had been formed, and he saw Milne get up from the ground and then strike the Alhambra man.—Milne said that the Alhambra player had used a very offensive term to him and had struck him, and he had hit back.—lt was decided to suspend Milne for one playing Saturday. It. was decided to present a shield for competition amongst the junior teams in the Eastern Districts. I. Ashworth was granted a transfer from the Galloway Club to the ZingariRichmond Club; D. N. Inglis, from Miller’s Flat to the Kaikorai Club; George Sanderson, from the Y.M.CA. (now defunct) to the Zingari-Richmond Club; P. W. M'pirea, from Y.M.C.A. to University; W. H. K. SIMILARITY TO NEW ZEALAND COLOURS. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 5. A dark blue jersey, with three gold Hons on the breast, and white shorts, will be the uniform worn by the British Rugby team that is due to arrive in Wellington on May 14. As the team includes players from all the counties . that comprise Groat Britainis possible that this colour has been chosen in preference to 1 that any of the individual counties of Eng-' land, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland, At the same time the point arises that there will be some difficulty in distinguishing players in matches with the New Zealand team, whose uniform is all black, the Jersy ornamented with a silver fern. Even more so will a difficulty arise in the Otago match, for the Otago colours are also dark blue. It is understood that this was pointed out to the visitors, but the dark blue was still chosen. NORTH ISLAND TRIAL MATCHES. NOMINATIONS FOR TEAM. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, May 5. _ The Waikato selector, Mr R. J. M'Kenzie, has nominated the following for the Rugby trial at Palmerston North:—R G. M'Williame, R. Chapman (forwards), S. Thomas (back).
