CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION.
SIDELIGHTS ON ROME. Mr J. B. Callan addressed the Classical Association last evening on the subject of “Rome,” relying Very largely upon a remarkable and extremely interesting collection of lantern slides to impress his audience with the grandeur, tradition, and history of this Old World centre. The lecture room at the Museum, where the meting was held, was filled to overflowing, and additional seating accommodation had to be provided. Mr W. J. Morrell presided, Mr Gallon eaid it was not his intention to attempt to instruct so learned a body as the Classical Association on matters about which they’ knew much more than he. But he had recently spent a little time in Italy and Rome, and Professor Adams had represented to him that some first-hand impressions of a recent visitor would be of interest, and that nothing of a learned character was expected. Professor Adams had placed at his disposal a magnificent collection of slides, from which he had selected a few. These would be shown, and he would make such desultory remarks as seemed applicable. The slides shown included views of the Capitol, the Roman Forum, the Forum Trojan, the* Colosseum, the Triumphal Arches of Septimius Severus. of Tibus and of Constantino, the Pantheon, St. Peter’s, San Giovanni in Laterano, the Vatican, the Sifitene Chapel, and other well-known, buildings and places. In addition to reminding bis amlienco of some of the historical associations of the pictures. Mr Callau had something to say of the appearance of Rome and of Italy generally under Fascist rule, and of the groat public rejoicings and ceremonies m Rome on the occasion of the Concordat in February. ]920, between the Vatican and the Italian Government. The chairman's motion proposing a vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried by acclamation.
