The Hawke’s Bay Steam Laundry, a large wooden building in Thackeray street, Napier, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The family had a narrow escape after being awakened by a pet dog and parrot, both of which perished. Two firemen were slightly injured, and the occupier, Mr Horrell,' received a badly cut hand while escaping. SEVEN ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, March 28. At about 4 o’clock this morning the seven-roomed wooden house .situated on the East road and owned and occupied by Mr F. W. Ellis, the well-known racehorse trainer, was totally destroyed by fire. The house was occupied by Mr Ellis and two boys at the time of the outbreak, and they were able to snatch only a few clothes in order to escape from the building, which was blazing fiercely when the occupants awoke The house was sheltered from the westerly wind by a high belt of trees and this fact, together with tlie effoits of the bucket brigade, prevented the fire from spreading to several stables and outhouses which were adjacent to the main building. As the residence was outside the boundary of the Invercargill Fire Brigade’s activities there was no means of subduing the blaze and the house ■was soon razed to the ground. Nothing whatever was saved. The building was covered by a £9OO insurance policy and the contents by a £4OO policy. A LOCAL CALL. The services of the Roslyn Fire Brigade were required last evening to extinguish a hedge fire at the Kaikorai School. No damage was done.
