April 3, s.—Timaru Meeting. By Sentinel. Qayoma was the best of a poor lot of hurdlers at Gore, and one should not take an exalted view of his dual win.- He .is, however, still only a young hurdler, and looks sure to train on to improvement. The merit of his win on the second day was enhanced by the fact that he barged into a hurdle and was well handled by his pilot. ■ ‘ ‘ It would be difficult to place some of the horses seen out 'at Gore where they would have a winning chance. . Ace of Hearts was nearly a winning trump card at Gore.' . Blue Metal won on his merits on the first day at Gore, but the bad luck element came in on top of his handicap for the second day. Jack-a-Dandy does not seem to‘warrant the support bestowed on him in fairly good company.' He was well backed and beaten at the Gore meeting,. / Money Mine looked more tuned up for business at Gore than he did at the Dunedin Cup meeting. He does best under a light weight over any distance. The track was too hard for Wingatui at Gore, and she would also be better served by more distance. The Gore track makes the luck of the run a very important factor for consideration. It is just as important to ride to the shape of the track as to consider the opposing form. Crossbow has speed, but appeared to, be running beyond his distance last week.. Town .Major requires a more experienced pilot than the lad who' had the mount at Gore. Everyone has got to learn, but some education may prove too costly. ' Royal Flower received a bad passage in both her races at the Gore meeting. Some trainers and owners do not seem to realise that a bad rider can lose on a good horse. This was very evident at Gore, where some riders were making, it aa hard as possible for their mounts, with the result that they did not trouble the judge. Laughing Prince is reported to be standing up to work, and shows promising signs of standing another preparation.

My Own, the winner of the Dannevirke Cup, was got by Lord Quex from Treseida, the dam of Gannymede, Runnymede, and Raasay, Tressida is out of a mare by Duke of Melton, who also got the dam of Amonnis.

\ One of the most attractive looking yearlings at the January sales was a colt by Nigger Minstrel from Equitaa. He was passed, at a reserve of 600 guineas, and it is interesting to note that Nigger Minstrel is siring winners in the north. Tray Bond is one of the speediest two-year-olds seen out this season. This, opin- - ion is confirmed by H. Gray, who rode her at the Wellington Cup meeting. Waterline is suffering from a bruised foot, but hopes are entertained that he will be right again for the Wellington autumn meeting. The Night Raid gelding Push-has been sold to an .Australian buyer. Pink Note was seriously kicked when at the post at Gore, and here again is another instance of unwarranted consideration being bestowed on fractious horses. L. G. Morris has bis hands full at Fordell, having the following horses in work: —Laughing Prince, Ruanui, Cashier, Cadland, Thrift, Consent, Freehold, Equitant, Glcnartney, _ Avro, High Falutin’, and Platina. Limited and Metellus are spelling, and there are four or five yearlings to be broken ■in shortly. . , , In reporting the Dannevirke Cup, “Vedette” said that The Hawk was favourite, in a good betting race, the event being one of the roughest seen for some time. My Own and Air Laddie began best from the outside, and crossed right across and disorganised the field. They led down the straight from Blimp, Marjoram, Chopin, and The Swell, with Mountain Heath last. My Own and Air Laddie were still in front at the six-furlong post from Chopin, .. Marjoram, Billion, The Hawk, and The Swell. The field bunched at the half-mile, with the order much the same except that Marjoram had improved. My Own, Air. .Laddie, Billion, and Balloon turned for home just in front of The Swell, Marjoram,! Blimp, and The Hawk. There was some crowding again in the straight, The Swell, The Hawk, and Mountain Heath being the sufferers. My Own beat, off the challengers, and won from Marjoram by a headi Balloon was half a length away third, with Blimp fourth. The Swell. Mountain Heath, and Stanchion followed in that order. My Own stayed on very well, and this was the best effort of her career, . She escaped all the trouble, and run over again, the race, no doubt, would have had a different result. Marjoram was a trifleunlucky at the turn, where The "Swell and The Hawk had" their chances .extinguished. Balloon and .Blimp' ran on. well. Air Laddie, could not go the distance, and both Stanchion and Mountain Heath were unlucky in running, ‘ TROTTING. FIXTURES. March 5, 6.—lnvercargill Meeting. March B.—Timaru Meeting.' 1 March 12.—Manawatu Meeting, March 15.— New Brighton Meeting. March 16, 17.—Hawke’s Bay Meeting. March 17. 18.— Nelson Meeting. March 19.—Wyndham Meeting. By Sentinel. J. T. Paul drove a very confident race behind Akenehi in the Mount Albert Handicap. In fact (says an Auckland paper) ’ with half a mile to go she was bo far away from the leader Her backers began to get uneasy. I When the grey mare, was asked for an effort she made no mistakes to win in good style. S. M. August has purchased the pacer lord Nepean. Acceptance for the first day of the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting are due • to-day. The New Brighton Trotting Club has made a donation of 50 guineas to the Cancer research fund. ;

Author Jinks has been i eased up, and will not be seen in public again for some little time.

The Western Australian Derby—the thirteenth in history—was decided at Perth on February 8, and was won by Wilfred, whose breeding is of interest to New Zealanders. He as by the Ribbonwood horses Alfred Donald from Princess Willowy who is by Willowwood, by Wildwood from Thelma, the dam of Wildwood Junior, Adonis, etc. The mile and a-half was covered at 2.23.1 to the mile rate. With only three of his stock racing, and the oldest four years old, Mr P. Watson's stallion, Travis Axworthy, has put up rather a remarkable record as a sire. The first to face the starter was Dilworth (says the Christchuch Press), and her record to date reads’: 24 starts, 8 wins, 6 seconds, and a third, while in stake money fine has won £2484, The next to appear -was Belle Axworthy, and though she has not yet entered Dilworth’s class, her record is a creditable one. It is as follows;—13 starts, 5 wins, 2 seconds, and & third for £875. The third of Travis Axworthy’s stock to catry silk is Erin’s Pointer, who has started three times for a win, and £2OO in stake money. Altogether Travis Axworthy’s three representatives have started 40 times for 14 wins, 8 seconds, and two thirds. The reinstatement of trotting events at meetings of the South Canterbury Jockey Club has raised some argument concerning the date on which the first event of this kind was run at Washdyke (says the New Zealand Referee). What may have been the 1 first advertised trotting contest at the racecourse was a three-mile race run in 1883 at the inaugural meeting of the Timaru Tradesmen’s Racing Club, a body which was founded in opposition—the word is used advisedly—to the Jockey Club, but which did not carry on for many seasons. There were half-a-dozen starters, all in saddle except Mr W. Collins’s Perfect Lady, who was “driven in harness, the trap being a very light one.” In the last round the Perfect Lady belied her name, as she bolted, and at the back of the course tipped out her pilot, fttia careered ahead with the vehicle

bouncing behind her, but was pulled -up when she attempted to negotiate a road fence.

The racing at Brennan Park, Perth, on the night of Febuary 8, was very thrilling, most of the finishes being closely contested and highly exciting (writes a Perth correspondent). _ A notable feature of the racing on the night mentioned was the establishment of a new State record by Marvel Lee one of the speediest marcs ever seen on Western Australian tracks. She _ dead-heated for second in the concluding event with Don Gale behind Katie Good. Marvel Lee stepped at a 2.161 clip from back mark over one mile and five furlongs. The previous record was 2.161, registered by the ex-New Zealander, Dean Dillon, early in November of 1927. Another one from.the Dominion in Tommy Dillon won the chief event, this being his third success in four starts.

Onyx is back in work again owing to paying a fruitless visit to the stud paddock.

Distance posts have been erected on the training track at New Brighton and the club’s action is much appreciated by the trainers who work their horses on the course. ’

J. Messervey, who has been laid aside with a .long illness, is now out again and was driving Granite City in his work at New Brighton. The very lengthy list of nominations, for the Ashburton Sapling Stakes of’Bsosovs shows that, there are plenty of light-har-ness champions in embyro about, and also that ample material exists towards making future fields. All the high-class stallions are well represented. Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting are due to-day. It is now said that Mr G. MMillan is not so anxious to sell White Satin and company as .he vyis a little while ago. White Satin stepped to a three-year-old record last week and in ordinary circumstances depreciates is value. The best value in light-harness stock is the unexposed form. TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. EAGER ROSE WINS CHIEF ’ EVENT. (Pee United Pbess Association.) TE AROHA. March 1. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting was held at Motukarara in ideal conditions, and with a large attendance. Good fields contested all the events, and the racing was always interesting. The totalisator investments were £14,365 an increase of £7B 10s over last year’e figures. Mr R. M. Morten acted as honorary starter.
