THE NEW SPEEDWAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —My attention has been directed to a statement in your to-day’s issue made publicly by Cr Wilson, that a resident adjacent to the Speedway Royal had informed him that, when motor cyclists were practising on the speedway, he could not hear himself speaking on his telephone. If the councillor had been fair he would, at least, have taken the pains to investigate the complaint before making public a remark from “the man in the street.” To check such exaggerated statements, I challenge Cr Wilson to place his cheque with you for the sum of £SO, and my _ cheque is enclosed herewith to cover this amount, on the following conditions:—
1. Next Wednesday night, when the Speedway meeting is in progress, Cr Wilson is to have the use of the Speedway telephone, which is right next door to the stadium, and can speak to any part of Dunedin while the races are in progress. 2. If Cr _ Wilson cannot hear as distinctly as in bis own home, I am prepared to pay my cheque for the amount stated to any fund which his Worship the Mayor may indicate, 3- A referee to he agreed upon between us will decide and if the result goes against Cr Wilson, then he, in turn, should also benefit the fund indicated by his Worship the Mayor.—l am., etc.,
Dot S. Johnston, Director, Dunedin Speedways, Ltd, Dunedin, Fcbfiruary 27*
