RIFLE SHOOTING.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM. IDEAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. (Pek United Press Association.) TRENTHAM, February 28. New Zealand’s economic position has had a detrimental effect on the attendance at the National rifle shooting meeting at Trcntham. Had wool maintained last season’s values, it is confidently expected that the entries would have been in the vicinity of 400. Trentham is known to sbootists as tricky on account of sudden wind valuations. To-day was perfect with respect to the weather, but the marksmen did not favour the conditions. In the afternoon the wind veered round to all points of the compass without warning, and those who struck bad patches fared badly. Many reliable shots crashed, including Captain Masefield and F. James, last year’s belt winner and runner-up respectively. The real business of shooting started late in the afternoon, when the first match counting for the belt was fired. In the first match, G. Eyles (Napier) finished with 49, his fifth shot being an inner. H. Searle (Nelson), who is a tyro, secured the Imperial aggregate With 201, G. Harrison (Kaponga) 200, being second.
