About five years ago an area in the Paraparaumu State Forest was enclosed with a stout high wire fence for an interesting experiment (reports the Levin Chronicle). Owing to the depredations of deer the forest had been practically denuded of young growth, and the trunks of trees were hare of any growth that could he reached by them. From this enclosure all animals were excluded except the opossum, with a view, to ascertaining to what, extent the bush would rehabilitate itself under such conditions. Photographs taken before and after that period leave no doubt as to what would happen, Young trees of numerous kinds have thrived, and there are numerous specimens even of the variety upon which the opossum liked to feed. Even though the animal leaves its mark on some of th-i larger trees, it could hardly be described as destructive to the older growth. Outside the fence only a few varieties of trees have grown to any height at all, and not one on the same scale as those inside, and these are mainly of the kinds that deer and other animals do not eat. Only a few of these have survived the traveling of the herds. Pigeonwood and houhou (five fingers) form the favourite food of the opossum.
