A Chicago advice states that an incident of lawlessness even unprecedented for . Chicago occurred to-day, when three enemies of the local “ beer baron ” burst into a ward of the German Deaconess Hospital, where the latter was lying with ' a broken leg, and fought pistol battle wi. him. Twently-seven shots were exchanged, and three bullets entered the “beer baron’s ” body, but, propped on his elbow, he continued to empty his revolver ,t the marauders, who had climbed up a fire escape and disappeared in the amo way. The duel threw the hospital, which is a large Institution, into a the patients screaming. Many who had been bedridden for weeks leaped out of their cots and ran into the corridors until they fell with weakness.
The “beer baron” escaped with his life. It is believed that his assailants were not injured.
