IN QUARANTINE.

THE AORANGI’S PASSENGERS, RELEASE EXPECTED BEFORE WEEK-END. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, February 25. There is every probability that many of the Aorangi’s passengers who are now in quarantine on Motuhi Island will be released on Friday or Saturday. Meanwhile they are having a pleasant time. Dr T. J. Hughes, medical officer ofhealth in Auckland, stated to-day that persons who had been exposed to smallpox infection were usually detained for three or four days after vaccination. If the inoculation then proved to have taken effect they were released. This would probably be - done in the present instance if all went well.

It was reported officially to-day that the _ smallpox patient was almost well again, and was in good spirits. All ' the other passengers were in good health. The Union Steam Ship Company, which is responsible for the general care of the quarantined people, is sparing no pains to make them comfortable. The third officer- of the Aorangi, Mr Knight, is in charge, and has under him 12 stewards, stewardesses, and a nurse from the ship, with 13 others, including a kitchen staff recruited in Auckland. Stores, including plenty of fruit, are sent down daily from Auckland. The commissariat is run exactly as if the quarantine station were a ship in port. The t passengers have meals according to classes, and everyone seems well satisfied, Bathing from two fine beaches and fishing have occupied many during the past few days. There is a mail every day. Dr J. Boyd, medical officer of health for South Auckland, is in ’control of the station, and Dr T. M'Kibbin, director of the public hygiene division., of the Health - Department, spent to-day on the island.
