SWIMMING BATHS FOR LAWRENCE.

TO THE EDITOR. \ Sir, A few weeks ago a correspondent in the columns of your rmper wrote about the very pressing need of swimming baths in the town of Lawrence. The children of our town are very fond of swimming and during the hot weather have been making a practice of swimming in old mining holes about Wetherstones and Blue Spur. This is very dangerous for adults leave alone children, as these holes are full of drives and shafts, and there are also large rocks jutting out of the sides. I ihe Blue Spur lagoon is 40 feet deep and , two miles and a-half away from Law I rence. What chance, therefore, would a 1 number of weak children have of saving “Jl 0 ,, of t “sir number in difficulties! Wetherstones is also two miles from Lawrence, and if this practice of swimming in mining holes continues a fatality will inevitably follow. These facts will show us the pressing need of baths in our town. .Recently, at our school jubilee, the suggestion was made that the surplus fund should be used for a scholarship to be Known as the John Stenhouse memorial scholarship. This was an excellent suggestion, but while it would only serve one or two each year, a John Stenhouse Memorial Baths would serve himd r ecls 1 for years to come. If the surplus funds from the jubilee were not sufficient, I am sure that there is not an ex-pupil who I would not contribute towards such a useful memorial to a revered rector, while a grant could be applied for to the Education Board. Trusting that there will be a revival of interest in the matter.—l am, etc., t Ex-Pupil Lawrence School. Lawrence, February 25.
