The West Coast gelding Ravine was unlucky at the start of his race at Riccarton on Saturday. He has two engagements at the Banks Peninsula meeting, where he will have a chance to demonstrate hie galloping ability, Topere ran a creditable race in the Midsummer Handicap, in which he finished third. Waterline and Hoylake, who beat him at Riccarton, are not engaged in the Peninsula Cup, in which the Arrowsmith gelding should be seen to considerable advantage. One or two horses which, are engaged at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday are much more favourably weighted than would have been the case had the handi-

caps been delayed until after the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. ' In. view of his two good performances at Riccarton on Saturday. Gay Crest will come in for strong support in the wera High-weight Handicap at the Banks Peninsula meeting. He ran out a solid mile when he finished second to Full Feather in the Post Handicap, and the opposition at Motukarara will not be so strong as. the field he beat at Riccarton. Waterline can boast of a solid staying pedigree (says the Press). His sire, The Ace, is by Bayardo (son of Bay Ronald) from Usaa, by Knight of Malta (son of Galopin), while on the side of the dam (Sailor’s Hope) there are two strains.of Musket, one through Maxim and the other through. Trenton, Sailor’s Hope is by Treadmill (son of Bill of Portland) from Fairhaven, by Pilgrim’s Progress (son of Isonomy); Waterline figures in the nominations for the Trentham Gold Cup, and also remains in the St. Leger. Stakes. As a result of having eaten sheep dip powder in a shed at Cootamundra (New South Wales), the Paper Money mare Short Order and a foal gelding died from poisoning. Short Order, who had been placed in a paddock preparatory to being put into work, was owned by Wallace Forbett, and was successful in Sydney last year, when she defeated Raisin at Rosehill. /

With Merry Damon and Merry Melody, G. W. New now has two of the progeny of Merry Roe in his stable. Merry Mel«dy is a brother to Merry, Mint, but is a much more compactly built sort. He showed promise at Woodville, and should not be long in the maiden ranks. The. conditions of .the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, of five furlongs, at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday, make the race eligible to. horses “who have not won a race at time of nomination.” Experience has shown that the conditions of the maiden events at the club’s meetings require revising. Last spring Pixie Gold won at Rangiora, and she spoilt the race at Motukarara a''few days later. . A year earlier, there was a /‘similar position, when Chide was successful in both events. The field for next Saturday’s race includes Spoon, and, after her easy win at Riccarton last week, her presence in the field will paralyse speculation. The trouble would be avoided by confining the, race to maidens " at time of starting." Silver Paper, made his reappearance at Riccarton on Tuesday, following on a few weeks’ spell. He was given exercise on r thc lead, but his trainer hopes to have luni ready to. race again later in the sea-

son. ''The three-year-old filly Stately, who . was sold recentjy to an Australian aports■man, will be shipped to Sydney this week. A. r M Aulay will have charge of the ' daughter of Paladin and Limelight on the trip, and on arrival will hand her over to 'her hew -owner, ■ ’ .New Zealand will not be strongly represented'at the autumn meeting of the Victoria Racing Club, which opens on Saturday. Gay Ballerina is the only horse hailing from the Dominion engaged in the Newmarket Handicap, while Second Wind is the sole hope in the Australian Gup. - The dual Derby winner, Phar Lap, may earn some of the honours in weight-for-age events.

TROTTING. FIXTURES. Morcb 6, 6.—lnvercargill Meeting, March 8. —Ximaru Meeting. March 12.—Manawatu Meeting, March 15.—New Brighton Meeting'. March 15, 17.—Hawke’s Bay Meeting. March 17. 18.—Nelson Meeting. 1 March 19.—Wyndham Meeting. ' By Sentinel. * Glenlak© showed a fine turn of speed in.his races at Wellington, but did not keep to his gait. He did no better at Kaikoura, being very unsteady, and breaking up more than once, _Chelmat, .who was second to Bingen Wilkes in the Kaiterau Handicap at Kaitoura, was imported from America by Mr J. R. MKenzie, and arrived in the Dominion with Royal Iroquois and others. He was put into work, but failed to show any form, and was sold at hack price some time ago. Chelmat is now trained Hawardcn, and he gave a glimpse of fair form in his race. He was obviously iiot in good racing condition, and he may do a good deal better in his next effort. A few months ago E. C. M'Dermott received from the late Mr J. Farrell a couple of young pacers, bred by the Hinds sportsman. Both have turned out very successful. The three-year-old filly Erin's Pointer won the Juvenile Handicap at the last meeting at Addington, and Ola Pointer who is by Logan Pointer from a mare by Petereta* won the Improvers* Handicap at Kaikoura last Saturday* Audience, who won ; tho mile saddle event at Kaikoura, is a half-brother, by Great Audubon, to the once brilliant Loganwood. He is owned in Greymouth, but is trained now by F. Holmes. Audience looked, like making a high-grade pacer as a two-year-old, but has° not trained on well. He is best in saddle events over sprint courses. ■ Ihe Ashburton Trotting .Club has received a record entry of yearlings for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, to be decided at the winter meeting of 1931. An interesting feature of the list is the number of young sires who are represented, w n ng , bei ?S Brigand, Basso Dillon Wilkes, Oriole. GJandore. Acron. Worthy Bingen, and Early Harvester. Denver City was made a hot favourite lor the chief event at Kaikoura, but the Denver Huon pacer was very bad at the post, and failed to go away. When Denver City was raced early in the season lie looked like making a more than useful sort, especially over a distance, but his efforts at Wellington and Kaikoura were very bad, owing to his fractiousness at the barrier. .-Our Lorn a, who finished second in each of her starts at Kaikoura, may do a good deal . better in future races* She was driven by D. Withers on each occasion! and he had to use all his art to keen her going fairly well as she was ready to break on the slightest provocation. ‘Our Lorna is a six-year-old by Peteretn, and has a good deal of speed, which, however, will not be any use unless she can he made to control it in races. W. J. Tomkinson is giving the exoouthiand pacer Country King plenty of , solid, useful work -at present. So far Country King has not done well in his training and has failed to show his true speed. . That fine young pacer Dilworth is enjoying a well-earned spell. She bad done a good deal of racing for a young mare, and the spell should prove very beneficial to her. bhe seems destined to take hieb honours on the track.

Conditions were excellent for the conclusion'of the Otahuhu Trotting Club's meeting at Alexandra Park to-day, and fast times were a feature of the racing, nearly, all the winners going faster than they were handicapped to do. The Suburban Handicap was a disappointing contest and there were ’only two horses with chances over the last mile. _ These were the back-markers Paradigm and Rangitero, and when Rangitero broke and lost about five lengths three furlongs from home, it was then easy for Paradigm, who won by a length. Audo Spray, whose display was not entirely faultless, was the only other to trot any way decently, but he could only finish a moderate third, seven lengths away. The winner, who was at a good, price, made it difficult for the others by stepping 4.41 3-5 off a 4.52 mark. Arachne and First Flight were slow away in the Newmarket Handicap, and after running into trouble in the third furlong were never afterwards dangerous. Ursuline, Dad’s Hope, Benefice, and Haerenga Pai were prominent for a mile, when Benefice drew away with Nella Dillon in dose pursuit. Benefice paced on attractively to the finish, and she won with a little in hand from Nella Dillon in the smart time of 3min 24 3-ssec, which was more than five seconds better than she was handicapped to do. Glandore, although he covered a good deal of ground, paced his best race for some time to finish a creditable third, and the closest of the others were Groat Ballin, Arachne and Hohora. The Canterbury representative Laplander was a slightly better favourite than Te Wahia for the Sylvia Park Handicap, and he justified his favouritism by waiting in behind the leaders until two furlongs from home, where he came out to win with ease from Te Wahia. Master Huia, who was the leader in the middle stages, was a fair third, and Dick Dillon was fourth, the others being well beaten. Laplander had no difficulty in registering slightly over a second better than his handicap time, and was evidently benefited, by his race on the first day. Te Wahia paced another solid race, and Tony Victor was going well with three furlongs covered, but he broke up and settled his chance completely. Sunshower was a good favourite for the Dominion Handicap, and she was a shade unlucky to lose, ns she cot pocketed in behind the pacemakers, Talent and Torpedo Huon, in the final lap. and failed to gat clear'until The Abbey had run past on the outside at the home turn. There was very little in it at the finish, and she was only beaten by half a length. Talent was responsible for the pacemaking. and he was still in charge at the home, turn, where Torpedo Huon was on his wheel with Sunshower in behind on the fence and The Abbey right up on the outside. The Abbey was at a good price, considering his form on the first day’ Talent paced probably the best race lie h-aa run over two miles hero, and was

just cut out of second place on the post. Torpedo Huon had every chance, hut was not quite good enough. In the Alexandra Handicap, Akenehi toot charge after going four furlongs, and was never afterwards headed to win easily from Gold Sovereign, with Writer a fair third. Akenehi never looked like being beaten once she reached the front, although she gave her backers a shock when she made a bad break at the home turn. However, she had the others well beaten at the time, and was still clear when she recovered her gait. Writer, who went slightly over a second better than the winner, lost ground over the first mile, but trotted like a good one in the final stages, and will do something better before the season is over.

The winner of the Richmond Handicap turned up in Reremai, who was responsible for the fastest performance of the day in stepping 4.25 2-5 of a 4.33 mark. Concertina and Warspite, who sprinted through smartly at the start, carried the field , along at a fast pace for about a mile and a-quarter, when Warspite broke. Reremai then took charge, and she was never afterwards troubled to win well from Florent, _ who cut Stoney out of second place in the last few strides. Evelyn Locanda was fourth, with Tony Victor next. The winner has often promised to do something good, but although she has won a few races she has often spoilt her performances by making mistakes when under pressure. In the Coates Handicap, Machine Gun confirmed his Otahuhu Cup form by finishing brilliantly to win comfortably from Jewel Pointer and Stanmoor. Four furlongs from home, Joy Bird, Stanmoor, and Sunshower, in close company, were about 10 lengths clear of Machine Gun, but they were all under pressure at the turn, where Machine Gun appeared on the outside and had them beaten before they straightened up. Sunshower had every chance, and finished weakly in sixth position. Jewel Pointer showed his first glimpse of form for some time, and is evidently recovering some of his old dash. Talent, Torpedo Huon, Gold Dial, and Free Advice all lost ground at the start, and Taleht, who finished fourth, would have gone very close to winning with a -decent’ getaway. ' In the Farewell Handicap, Belle Axworthy justified the confidence of her supporters by registering a fine performance to win handsomely. Trustworthy was responsible for most of the running, and was still in charge at the home turn, where Belle Axworthy was on her wheel, with Warplane, Hohora, and Enawah next. ■ Belle Axworthy came away in the straight and won by two lengths from Warplane, with Benefice a close third, just ahead of Trustworthy, who tsopped badly in the run home; The winner is a food one, and will win in better company, .nawah was slow away, and then covered more ground than anything in the race, being outside several horses nearly all the way. She, too, is good, - and can be expected to make amends very soon. DANNEVIRKE RACING CLUB. FIRST DAY'S RESULTS, OWN WINS THE CUP. (Feb United Pbess Association.) DANNEVIRKE, February 26 .'f h e a utumn meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club was commenced today in fine weather before a good attendance. The track was in excellent order. handled £14,981, as against £13,939 for the first day of the corresponding meeting last year. As the result of a bumping finish in the Cup, R. E. Coveney, the rider of Balloon, was susponded for two weeks for careless riding and for allowing his mount to run over on other horses. The following are the results:— HIGH-WEIGHT. GORE RACING CLUB. MONEY MINE WINS CHIEF EVENT. (From Our Special Reporter.) GORE, February 26. The Gore Racing Club’s autumn meeting was opened in fine weather except that a cold wind prevailed. The track was in good order, and a large attendance filled the stands and inside enclosure. The card provided some interesting races. Money Mine and Stealth had the finish of the principal event to themselves, the former staying on better at the end. Latin Quarter looked dangerous at the far turn, but finished at the tail of the field with Pink Note. Blue Metal, for the first time in bis career, had a good light-weight on top, and he won’well at the finish of the Croyden Handicap. Royal Saxon suffered interference at the home turn, and otherwise would have finished closer to the money. Inevitable ran a fair race, but had no chance with the winner. Gayoma outstayed Oriflamb in the Gore Hurdles. The latter was probably a bit short of work through a slight lameness. Palermo won all the way in his race, and is a useful sort. Both the trots were won with a little in hand. Jock o’ Hazeldean made up a good deal of ground before winning the Novice Race. The final event provided a good finish, which saw Sailing Home get up in the last stride and beat Paris on the post. During the day £14,354 10s went through the totalisator, compared with £9753 10s last year. Since the last meeting a great improvement has been effected by providing a straight run from the six-furlong post, which was formerly placed near a turn.
