CITY POLICE COURT.
Wednesday, February 26. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) SENT TO BORSTAL. A youth named Hiram Davis, who was previously charged with stealing 3s in money, the property of Jessie Blanche Conroy, and an axe belonging to Arron Ernest Davis, appeared for sentence.— Chief Detective Cameron said that the accused had been released on remand on condition that he stayed in the suburbs with his relatives. These people, however, did not appear to have taken any interest in the lad, who had been loitering about the streets since he was last before the court. —The magistrate, observing that institute control was obviously necessary for the accused, ordered him to be detained in the Borstal Institute for a period of two years on the first charge.—The second charge was withdrawn. A PROBATIONER’S LAPSE. Alfred Finn pleaded guilty to having failed to comply with the terms of his release on probation.—Chief Detective Cameron explained that the accused, in November, 1928, had been admitted to probation for three years on charges of obtaining money by false pretences and unlawful conversion of a motor car. Until recently he had- done well, but his employer eventually had to discharge him, and a month previously, whilst the probation officer was away on leave, he had obtained his bank book from the probation officer and withdrawn all his savings (about £25), most of which he had spent.—The probation officer (Mr Garbutt) said that after doing comparatively well, the accused had been discharged from bis employment. ■ He had told falsehoods about the reasons for his discharge, and when questioned as to what he had been doing he continued lying. He had apparently reverted to his old habits, as recently ho had borrowed a friend’s car. and had abandoned it near Milton; he had also been given £2 10s on the previous Saturday to pay his board, but .be had spent this. His mother, when interviewed, thought that the only tiling for him was the Borstal.—On the original charge, the accused was ordered to be detained in Borstal/ for two years, and he was convicted and discharged for breach of his probation.
