LONDON'S ROYAL PARKS
PROJECTED CHANGES. PROTESTS THROUGH THE PRESS. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, February 24. (Received Feb. 26, at 5.5 p.m.) In the House of Commons (Mr George Lansbury (First Commissioner of Works) was called on to defend his alterations of some of London’s Royal parks, principally Hyde Park. The projected changes have already evoked large correspondence in the press, mostly protesting against “ transforming Hyde Park into a sort of Lido.” Mr Lansburv, defending the erection of a bathing pavilion at the side of the Serpentine, said: “ I want to satisfy Mrs Grundy, if I can. Though' I am a person of the broadest views the day lias gone to say that women shall not bathe in the Serpentine, though they are permitted to sit in the House of Commons and share iu all its amenities.” The amendment to reduce the vote for office works was defeated by 214 to 102.
