LINTON COLLIERY.
BREACHES OF THE ACT. GREATER PRECAUTIONS NECESSARY. {Per United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, January 20. As a sequel to the Royal Commission's report on the Linton colliery disaster, in Southland, it is reported that action is to be taken against certain colliery officials and a workman for alleged breaches of the Mining Act in respect to the safety preeautions. The Minister (Mr W. A. Veitchj considers that the penalties for carrying matches into dangerous mines do not appear to be sufficiently severe, and the Royal Commission had pointed to the necessity of not only strictly examining men prior to entering the mines, but of taking power to examine any miners while in the workings. He would decide later t“ e . a( lvisability of calling a conference of coal mine owners and workers’ representatives to consider the questions of the proportion of stone dust in mines, as the present law on the subject was not sufficiently comprehensive.
