INTERESTING ITEMS FRO,Vi . OXFORD. . THE HON6I CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, December 12. At the inaugural meeting for 1929-30 of the Oxford Hongi.Club, the association of New Zealanders in Oxford, the following officers were elected: —President, Dr A. L. Haslam: secretary, Mr C. A. Sharp; treasurer. Mr W. E. Henley. The annual dinner of the club was held in Magdalen College on November 23, and came fully up to the high standard ot success enjoyed in recent years. toasts of “New Zealand” and of The Guests-” were proposed by the president and Mr J. F. Platts-Mills respectively, Mr ,J. Ritchie (Cambridge Heitiki Club) replying on behalf of the guests. Those present were; Messrs T. Ritchie, P. H* Williams, H. D. Johnstone, J. Oliver and W. M'Hardy, all of Cambridge; and of Oxford —Dr A. X*. Haslam, Dr W* D. Morrell, Messrs R. Syne, W. G. Kalaugher, C. E. Low, G. F. Saunders, C. A' Sharp, J. F. Platts-Mills, Q. 0. Wilson, W. Gunson, W. E. Henley, E. E. Bailey, K. Clark, J. T. W. Hogg, and E. T. C. Newton. The following New Zealanders have gone into residence at Oxford this year:—-Mr E B Bailey (Magdalen) and Mr W. a. Henlev (New College), Rhodes scholars; and Mr J. T. W. Hogg (Balliol) late of Christ’s College and Victoria College. Mr Bailey’s application for permission to read for the doctorate in philosophy has been approved. Mr Henley, after playing regularly in the Oxford serum, was chosen to play in the fifteen against Cambridge, being the first New Zealander since Mr G. G. Aitken to attain that honour in Rugby football. , , Mr C. E. Low, who last year completed the tenure of his Rhodes scholarship, is still in Oxford. Mr.W. P. Morrell continues as_ Beit lecturer in colonial history, and is engaged on research work in that field ot scholarship. . . Mr R. Syme, after some time in Rome and the Near Bast, has returned to Oxford as a fellow of Trinity College, and is proceeding to the conquest of fresh realms in classical history. Dr A. L. Haslam is doing further research work in law. He continues to strengthen Oriel College rowing and is, moreover, president of the Seven Seas Club and secretary of the Raleigh Club. Mr W. G. Kalaugher has been extremely unlucky with injuries this season, and capped everything by dislocating his shoulder, thus putting an end to his very good chance of a Rugby blue. He is reading mathematics in his spare time, in preparation for the B.A. final schools next June. , . Mr J. F. Platts-Mills is doing the same thing in law. He has been rowing so well that he has been included in one of the university trial eights. He also boxes occasionally for the university, and has. moreover, made several well-received speeches at the union. Of old Christ Collegians, Mr D. R. Bal-combe-Brown, who is at Oriel, has completed the third year of his medical studies. Mr E. S. Gerard, of Brasenose. is prominent in university fencing, and Mr J. D Rankinc in university shooting. Mr K. Clark plays Rugby for Magdalen; Mr 0. 0. Wilson is at Lincoln, and i\J.r E. T. C. Newton is at Wadham, all in their second year. Mr G. H. 0. Wilson, of Lincoln, who is to sit B.A. final schools next June, will probably be returning to New Zealand after that date. Mr C .A. Sharp plays in St. John s College hockey team, and is secretary of the college L.T.C. He is to sit B.A. final schools next June. T , , i Mr C. O. Brasch, of St. John’s, and Mr G. F. Saunders, of Balliol, have both completed two years, and are working in preparation for the forthcoming schools examinations in history and classics respectively. , _ ~ Air W Gunson, of Queen s College, is in his third year at Oxford, and plays in the college first fifteen. Beside Mr Syme and Dr Morrell, there are four New Zealanders who are dons in Oxford: —Mr Kenneth Sisam (secretary of the Clarendon Press!. Dr S. P. M'f'allum. of New College; Hr J. T. Irving. of Trinity; and Mr F. A. 1 aylor. of Christ Church.
