EARLY. MORNING BLAZE. BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) TAUMARANUI, January 6. Fire broke out in Manuaute street at 3.15 this morning, and a building owned by Mr A. C. Riches and occupied by Everybody's Motors and Mr J. Pattison (saddler) waß gutted. Practically all the stock carried by both firms was destroyed. The alarm was given by three engineers working in the King's Picture Theatre, which adjoins the damaged building. The flames soared high in the sky, and a large crowd of spectators assembled in the street. The brigade did good work in saving the theatre, which was several times on fire. Only one wall was slightly burnt. Films worth £I6OO stored in the theatre were removed. Another outbreak at 6.45 was quickly extinguished. The building was insured for £3OOO in the South British, and Pattison's stock and fittings for £4OO in the London and Lancashire. Everybody's stock was insured in the Phoenix, but the amount is not available. LOCAL CALLS. At 11.40 p.m. on Sunday, the City Firo Brigade was called to Victoria road, St. Kilda, where fire had broken out in n shop and dwelling owned by Miss Goodwin and occupied by Mr W. The shop and contents, which were insured for £l5O in the New Zealand office, were badly damaged, but the house did not suffer. There is a policy covering the house in the Sun office, but the amount is hot available. The brigade answered a summons to the old Daily Times building in Dowling street at 8.15 yesterday morning, the carpenters working there having accidentally set off the automatic alarm. The Fire Brigade was immediately summoned by the May-Oatway device (controlled by the Vigilant Automatic Fire Alarm with the result that the fire was speedily extinjruished by first aid with comparatively little damage, thus obviating a serious conflagration.
