LAWN TENNIS.
NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS (Peb United Press Association.) WANGANUI, January 4. Heavy rainstorms and driving wind caused a postponement of play in the final stages of the North Island Lawn Tennis Championships at the Wauganui Club s courts. A few matches were played on Saturday morning. The semifinals of the Ladies’ Championship Singles provided two surprises, Mrs Adams defeating Miss Myers and Miss Nicholls deieating Mrs Melody, both winning in two set matches. Mrs Adams commenced poorly and ivas down 3—l, but she soon got on to her game. Miss Myers was not at home on the heavy courts, and was also troubled with the perfect length shots to her back hand. In the second set -Miss Myers was off her drive, and Airs Adams had no difficulty m finishing 6—2. Miss Nicholls won easily from Sirs Melody. The latter did not produce the torn she had shown earlier in tha tournament. Miss Nicholls’s driving was pertect, and Mrs Melody was frequently caught out of position. an< L Lampe were superior to oteadman and Charters, whom they met in the semi-final of the Men's Championship Doubles. The former pair combined better than on the previous day and played aggressively from the net, smashing and volleying with accuracv. Results':— LADIES’ SINGLES. Semi-finals. Airs Adams beat Miss Myers 7 5 6 — 2. ’ Miss Nicholls beat Mrs Melody, C—4 6 — o. MEN’S DOUBLES. Angas and Lampe beat Stedman and Charters, 6 —3, 6 —3.
