CALEDONIAN SPORTS. . The tenth annual sports gathering held yesterday at the show grounds by the North Otago Caledonian Society were the most successful ‘ held hero for some years past from every point of view, except the weather, which was in fickle mood. A heavy shower just after the last .athletic event delayed the completion of . the dancing competitions, but otherwise the events were run off with despatch, showing an organisation which left nothing to he desired., The presence of such noted champions as H. Opperman, A. C. Ritchie, and DM Lennan no doubt attracted the public, the crowd being estimated at oyer 3000. The' gate takings amounted to £175, as compared with £ll6 for last year. Opperman was brought down from Christchurch at a_ cost ot £35, the bulk of which was subscribed to' the society by local sportsmen. At' the annual dinner prior to the commencement of the sports the president' (Mr W. ’Gerrie) extended a cordial_ welcome to the visitors, and his Cfet wishes to all for a happy new year, hollowing on the toast of "* The King,” the Mayor (Mr Frank Crawshaw) proposed the toast of The Visitors,’’ and after joining _ih their welcome, congratulated the society on its efforts to foster sport, in the. district. Messrs G. E. Perkins 1 (president of the N.Z.A.C.). A. 31. D. .Mansort (Country Association), and H, Opperman responded. I The Australian cyclist,- in a happy speech, touchcd'on the value of sport for bringing the. peoples, of the world together. _ He was pleased to see the sporting spirit'so strong in' New-'Zealand and the' number of - societies which' worked wholeheartedly in the. interests of sport. ■The record of famous athletes showed that they made their beginnings at the country meetings, and, if those had not been held,' they would not have received their chance. ■ He "thanked them • all for the hospitalbity extended to him in New Zealand, which was the equal.to that found in any part of. the world. • The excellence’.of. the organisation of the sports , redounds to* the credit of the directors of the society, who are endeavouring to regain for-North Otago the. reputa-s. tion pf the premier, athletic centre, of the Dominion, The allocation of several. New-. Zealand championships attracted good entries from first class athletes, and, with the running apd cycling tracks in good order,’good performances were-the order of the day. In the running events the 100 Yards New Zealand Championship was won by N. M*Lennan, of Christchurch. in even time, as was also the 130 Yards Caledonian Handicap off. throe yards in 12 2-ssec. The cup for most points was annexed, by J. Sim, ofWeston, who gained first places in the 880 Yards and Mile ’Handicaps. Perhaps the most interesting of- the cycling events ■ was the pursuit race of three miles between Oppenman (Australian champion) v and A. C. Ritchie (New Zealand champion). 'Ritchie commenced with a lead of half a length, but in each of the 12 laps Opperinain gained materially, until he finally reduced theTead to one-half, or about 11 yards, his time for the three miles being /min 23 3-ssec. ; Opperman failed to gam a place in Lis heat for the Halfmile, hut was second in his heat for the Mile Champipnship, first in his heat in the One Mile and a-half, third in hia heat , in the ' Mile Handicap and second in the Two-mife Championslup, P. L. Hansen, of Waimate, won the Half-mile and Mile Handicaps, while v Jansen, also of Waimate. annexed the Mile Championship’ The One Mile and a-half Championship fell to O Weir (Christchurch) and-the Two-mile Championship to C. Austin, of Dunedin. The cups were presented by Mr J. Gerrie and the championship ribbons by Mesdames I). M'lntosh and J, Jardinc, In the piping the New Zealand championship for jigs, and hornpipes was won by A. M’lntyre, of Christchurch. There were only three competitors in this section, but the dancing was of a very high standard, a point separating the competitors in the different events. The two New Zealand championships in dancing were won by Tui Cairns (sword dance) and Violet Cameron (Irish jiyL • The judges of piping and dancing, Messrs Di Scott, sen. and jun., gave a very fine exhibition of dancing and piping, which was warmly applauded by the spectators. It is not often -that a performance of such merit is given by father and son, the father being a noted piper, while the son holds the New Zealand championship for the sword dance. It was a pleasing interlude in a day of good performances. The directors and officials are to be congratulated on the success achieved, and the support accorded by the public should spur them on to even greater efforts. The result must be very gratifying to them, and especially to the president, Mr G. Gerrie, and* secretary, Mr J, D. Forbes, who, with the loyal co-operation of their fellow officials, brought, the gathering to such a successful conclusion. The following were the results:— RUNNING. 75 Yards Handicap.—First heat; P. The match between the North Otago representative eleven and Mr Beale’s Auckland touring team was commenced at the School ground -yesterday. The wicket was in excellent condition, and the outfield fairly fast despite the recent rains. The visitors opened with Lawrie' and ■Vipond to the bowling of Zimmerman and Carrington. Both fell early victims to Carrington, but Lyon and Schnauer made a fine stand. Lyon played good cricket w;ith an occasional pretty lata cut. Vivian and Lewis continued in the afternoon, but Lewis was soon clean bowled by J. Robertson. When in sight of his icentury, Vivian skied a ball from J. Robertson, and was caught. This was thc_ first mishit he had made, and his innings was a delight to watch, embracing hard hitting in front of the wicket with solid defence. Smith did not get into Ins stride for some time, but hit hard for his 34. Langton (23) and Owen (32 not out) made useful contributions, bringing the total to 331, The local fielding was patchy. J. Robertson took a fine catch in dismissing Lyon, but several chances went begging. The ground fielding._ too, left a good deal to be desired. North Otago made a disastrous start, opening with Uttley and J. Robertson, The first-named faced the bowling, and in the first over bit one hard to cover, and called. His partner made every effort to reach the crease, but the bails were off when he was well out of his ground. Uttley did not last long, being bowled with an off break by Langton, and Dick and Carrington played out time. During the short time the visitors were in the field, their fielding was. clean and accurate. • Messrs MTntyre and Tweed officiated as umpires. The following are the scores: AUCKLAND. First Innings.
