The weather was showery at Wingatui yesterday morning, but did not prove sufficiently adverse to interrupt training operations. 1; riday is, however, almost invariably an off morning, and all the horses seen on the track were restricted to steady pacing. The tracks presented a fairly busy appearance and confirmed the impression that there are quite enough local horses to make a success of the Dunedin summer meeting, which starts on Boxing Day, Several visitors are booked to race, and as the existing weather can hardly be perpetual it only requires 'an improvement in that direction to provide an enjoyable meeting. , should be some interesting work at Wingatui to-day and on Tuesday next, m hen tlio final fast work for the Dunedin summer meeting will take place.Heather Lad continues to stand up to fairly solid work, and although both his forelegs look doubtful, they seem to be callous, as there is no visible evidence of soreness in walking or galloping, t , Ho S an h aa arrived with Night Lad. Amongst the members of J. Feilder’s team at Wingatui is the thre-year-old gelding Nonchalant, a brother toDonalbam, who has been showing useful winning. form in Victoria. The recent rams will prove a blessing to some horses engaged at Wingatui, as the improvement in the state c f the going may see them start at the meeting with a much better chance than if the tracks had remained hard. Money Mine is bowling x along very freely in his work and will not iuil during the holiday meetings through lack of racing condition. Duke has been responsible for a good deal of solid work but has not been up against the watch.

.Djdujcnssmg the contemplated meeting Nightmarch and Chide in the autumn, a Sydney writes ventures the opinion that the first time they clash Nigfitmarch is sure to be favourite, in Sydney, at all events.

The North Island rider, L. T. Daly who has decided to make Wingatni his r» Uar *j- rs ’ make a good start at tne Dunedin summer meeting, as he has been bonked for every flat race on the nrst days card. His mounts will bo lardy, Meitui, Money Mine, Wig Wag Waving Corn, Sailing Home, and Tarquinius Daly will thus receive a fair opportunity to make good at the outset of his Sruith Inland career. T. During the absence of P. V. Mason in Auckland, the home team is being kept going by J. Scobie. Goblin Market, Pride, Swim-ay, and the two-year-old Ozone are all in regular work. In the meantime their tasks are of an easy character, but the three first-named arc all forward enough to be got ready for racing with a few- smart gallops. Ozone is going along quietly. This well-grown youngster is a hkely sort, provided he remains sound. The five-year-old mare Discordia met with an untimely end at Riccarton a fewdays ago. She pulled up suddenly when working slowly on the plough, and it was found that _one of her hind legs was broken. This was the third mishap in the last six weeks in almost the same place on the track, but in the case of both Glengariff and Discordia, the break was traced to faulty bone formation. Discordia was bred by Mr D. H. Roberts, and wag by Warplane from the Kilbronev marc. Killjoy. She was taken over from Mr Roberts (Jiis season by her trainer, F. Christmas, who anticipated a successful trip with her to the West Coast meetings.

About 70 horses from Riccarton stables will be racing in various parts of the Dominion during the approaching holidays. More than half the number will do the West Coast circuit. A. M'Aulay gave Nightmarch and True Shaft a rest after they returned from Australia, but he has taken the pair in hand again and will make an early start to prepare them for. another campaign. They are reported to be in bright condition to commence work again. It seems probable that they will do their autumn racing in Australia. The Easter carnival at Kandwick will be the chief objective, but it is possible that they will race in Melbourne before going to Sydney. This, however, is a detail that has not been settled.
