AUCKLAND, December 20.

After a discussion listing till an earl? hour in the roornifig, the Auckland City Council resolved by 12 to 10 votes that expert advice should be sought in the selection of a city engineer, for which 75 applications had been received from Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere. This number had previously been reduced by the council to six, and a strong public protest had been made through the press against the final selection being made without expert advice. Mr Mawson, director of town planning, and Mr Furkert, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, will bo asked to make a confidential report on the six applicants.

ROTORXJA, December 20.

In the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., Hori Mau, Albert James Brown, and Edwin Fowkes were charged with breaches of the Gaming Act. The police asked for a remand to January 14, which was granted. F. N. Ambler, Auckland, charged with travelling on the Whaka road at 60 miles an hour was fined £5, and costs. Inspector Ford stated that his speed to overtake the defendant was 68 miles an hour.

Lionel Sbotter Dawes, charged with attempted rape on December 15 at Rotorua, was committed to the Supreme Court at Hamilton for trial on February 24.

PALMERSTON N., December 20. ;Iu the Police Court Henry Bell, aged 64, a cook out of employment, was charged with wilfully setting fire to a building in Ruahine street last evening, and was remanded till the afternoon. A constable proceeding home noticed the fire and warned the occupants and arrested the accused.

WELLINGTON, December 20. The first New Zealand Congress of Esperantists will take place under the auspices of th- New Zealand Esperanto Association at Wellington on January 17 and 18 next. The congress will be attended by club representatives, Universal Esperanto Association delegates, and esperantists from various parts of the Dominion. ASHBURTON, December 20. William Whalley was fined £lO and had his license cancelled for 12 months for being intoxicated while in charge of a car. The defendant, thinking that he was at a crossing, ran into a railway yard, damaging his ear against a stationary rakt of trucks.
