By SeWthikl.

The recent rain gave the Wingatui tracks a good saturation, which will result in excellent going, devoid of sting, unless a gale dries the course prior to the meeting opening on Thursday next. The outside of the course was -open yesterday morning, but not many horses were sent fast, as the majority got through good half-pace work.

J., Feilder commenced operations by sending his team in steady work. Chirada was allowed to move along at about three-quarter pace over three furlongs. Waving Corn cantered round and then came home, an easy half-mile in 56aeo. The Solferino—Rosalita mare seems ■to be. ready to run a good race. Stealth, Captivate, Meitui, Impertinence., and High Speed followed with nice striding work, and a similar task was allotted Fqn and Fancy, who then came over half a mile la 56sec. Pink Sunrise and Salmo Salar did. a three-quarter pace gallop over about & mile.

, Skysign and Royal Flower were responsible for six furlongs in Imin 24 4-ssec, and ■ Camisader went strongly over the same ground in Imin 27 4-Ssec.

Sailing Home went seven furlongs in Imin 40seo without being allowed to extend himself at any part of the journey. Money Mine did a useful working gallop ovor a circuit under a good hold and moved with plenty of dash. Positive led Tormentor at the end of five furlongs in Imin I2sec, and Academy and-All Smiles covered the same distance in similar time.

The ground was commencing to dry when El Boa. Gold Tinge and Francolin broke away from the five-furlong post, and the last-named led home in Imin 7 1-Ssec, the last four in 55sec.

With the sting out of the going Tembroney and Solmar strode out well when covering five furlongs In -imin IS l-ssec. Both horses have been showing signs of soreness, but the rain has helped them to gollop. Wingatui had to be held back to John Bradbury when galloping six furlongs in Imin 25sec. Wingatui is putting plenty of dash into her work.

Black Duke and Assemble were allotted steady work, and Caterpillar went at less than half-pace over a couple of circuits.

Royal Saxon and Blue Metal worked together and improved the pace over the final three furlongs by running from that post in .46seo. Crossbow covered five furlongs in Imin 11 I-ssec.

Sudden Storm, Heather Lad, Beauty Light, Bain Cloud, Banderilla, Broadfield, Battle Screen, Moth, High Gear, Evening, Court Jester, Dumblane, Tardy, Compensation, Martis. and. others got through useful tasks of a lenient nature.

jimmy Trigger was schooled over three flights of hurdles. He went straight into his jumps, but his getaway on landing suggests that he needs company to improve his hurdling. Evening was showing signs of shoulder lameness when working .yesterday mornimj. It may, however, be only a passing ailment.

Reports from Wellington state that 0. Emerson has been engaged to ride Glare in the Otokia Handicap, and apparently he is a doubtful starter in the Otago Handicap. Acceptances for the Dunedin summer meeting, and entries for the Trial Stakes are due to-day. J. W. Lowe has left Trentham for Wingatui with Glare and Quantum. B. H. Morris will have the mount on Historic in the Auckland Cup, and apparently the Nassau gelding will be sent to the post. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride Prodice in the Auckland Cup. Kerbside has made a good recovery from her accident, but is still in the iaddock.

Zeuxis is reported to be shaping well In hia schooling over hurdles. Dutch Money and Tarquinius will be railed from Christchurch to Wingatui on Monday to fulfil their engagements at the Dunedin summer meeting. . Mr G, A. Kain has purchased the four-year-old horse Lord Warden, a chestnut son of Hurry On, to replace Solferino at the Gladstone Park Stud. He is said to be a very fine type of horse. His dam, Hythe, was got by Chaucer (son of St. Simon) from Miss Gunning 11, by Carbine from Memoir, by St. Simon from Quiver, the grand-dam of Polymelus. The Last Dart—Mantua filly and the Paladin—Ada Merling filly were companions on the Wingatui track yesterday morning. The Ada Merling filly has more size ana scope than the Mantua filly, but the latter has more freedom of action when moving along. Ada Merling is the dam of Red Wink, and Mantua’s first contribution to the Stud Book is a promising sort.

Owners have made an excellent response to the Southland Racing Club’s summer programme, and a.good card seems to be assured for each day of the meeting. The formation of some new training' tracks at Wingatui recalls the famous gallops laid down by Lord George Bentinch when he was dictator of the English turf. He ploughed out the ground, and then, on a layer of tan, placed back the soil and then on more tan a top-dressing of soil, and so made the-most perfect turf ever seen in England. Tan imparts buoyancy to the going, and a light dressing of it. is the best method of improving grass tracks. Looking more and more at the handicaps for the Auckland double they are very heartening for the admirers of some proved gallopers. Star Stranger, of course, has a luxurious weight, but fsays “Vedette”) his case is not alone, and on actual figures Paquito comes in very well. Before Paquito finished third in the A.J.C. Metropolitan with 8.7, and second in the Melbourne Cup with 8.5, he was handicapped for' the New Zealand Cup at 8.9. His Auckland Cup weight of 8.1 must have been a very pleasant surprise for his connections. He may not win the Auckland Cup, or even finish in a place, but figures certainly favour him. Trainers are continually being faced with irksome delays in railway transport of horses, although there has been some improvement recently. At the same time, patronage of motor transport is increasing, for it is found to be much more satisfactory. One day last week (says the Wellington Post) the Trentham trainer, H. Telford, received advice that Joy Bird, who is now again in his stable, had left Otaki by train at about 4 p.m. She arrived at Thorndon at 9.50 p.m., and finally turned up at Trentham at 5 a.m. next day. For times and distances this must have been something of a record, and probably she could have been walked from Otaki to Trentham in less time. During an interval between races at Te Awamutu the two-year-olds Royal Ruler (H. Goldfinch), Biddy’s Boy (L. J. Ellis), and Wild Time (J. Day) were sent in a sprint with the colours up on the course E roper. They were_ not out to make time, ut moved along nicely, and were almost together at the finish. Royal Ruler is developing into an attractive colt, and is carrying a bright appearance at present. tor a time after winning the Weicome Stakes at Ellerslie he was affected with a cold, but the trouble has passed off, and he is now doing well. Unless something unforeseen occurs. Royal Ruler will be at Ellerslie to contest the Great .Northern Foal Stakes on Boxing Day. Barrier positions count a good deal in short races on the smaller courses, and to a decided degree in big fields, even at Irentham (says a northern writcrj. There is a suggestion from one who has watched closely- the draw being made, that the balloting by marbles from the approved bos gives jockeys who procure an early position in the queue an advantage. It is said that the marbles are picked up in their numerical order from the rack, and dropped in the bos. Naturally, unless the bos is lifted and well shaken the small numbers are at the

bottom, and fall out first iu most Instances. It might bo suggested to officials that when all the marbles are placed in the box, the latter be lifted, turned over, and well shaken, before the draw be proceeded with. This is the considered opinion of an observant racing man who has noticed that the older riders are always first up to the box to draw for' places, and incidentally with good average result. A matter that appears to have escaped notice, but one which is rather important, is the handicaps for the Trial on the second day of the Te Kuiti meeting. Tne weights were started with Parfait Amour 8.12, whereas the rules of racing distinctly state that the top weight in any handicap flat race, excent in races for two-year-olds, shall not be less than nine atone. Naturally (says “ The Watcher ") they were “in” on Parfait Amour very strongly, but be got beaten. This, however, does not alter the fact that the rules of racing were not observed by the handicapper, who, above all persons, should be aware of his error. It is extremely doubtful if the race under notice was a race according to racing law. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., have issued a most'.attractive catalogue, for the fourth national sale. The catalogoe is very well illustrated and makes a most valuable work of reference. A nice compliment is paid to New Zealand’s champion stake winner. Limerick, as a striking picture of, Limond’s son adorns the handsome cover of the 200page booklet. The pedigrees of 72 yearlings which are to be submitted by the firm in conjunction with their Australian collaborators, Messrs H. Chisholm and Co., of Sydney, are extended in full detail, and a glance through this seems to offer substantial evidence in confirmation of the statement in the catalogue that the quality and breeding of the yearlings coming up tor sale this year is the best the firms have yet had to offer. Reference is also made to the phenomenal successes scored by the; youngsters- catalogued at previous sales, among which may be. mentioned Honour, Phar Lap, Pink Coat, Tot Spring, Concentrate, Perception, Gold Tinge, Royal Duke, Count Palatine, Episode, Night. Lad, Peacemaker, First Money, Duellona, Glenartney, Courtlike, Oral, False Scent, Hunting Day, Refresher, Hunting Boy, and as present season two-year-olds such a formidable team as Praise, Gesture, Veilmond, Goldfind, Royal Ruler, Chief Link, Princess Betty, etc. ' Successes such as are attributed to the horses named are a unique advertisement for the sales. In addition to the particulars mentioned, there also appear-reference pedigrees, of no less than 27 sires, making the publication, which was this year compiled- and produced in the Dominion, a very up-to-date one indeed. There is a dramatic interest in the story of the career of Gordon Richards, who haa headed -the winning jockeys’ list in England in three successive seasons, and whose abilities as a. horseman ate made the subject of much eulogy. A London’ writer, in referring to Richards's marked rise to fame as a. jockey,, remarked: “When he left school Richards took a humble job in a commercial house, but, he was 'racing mad,' and. greatly against the wishes of his parents, he wrote to a trainer asking for a job. He was fortunate in that he addressed the letter to Martin Hartigan. and, though rather older than is usual, he was taken, on as an apprentice. He showed a wonderful aptitude as a.rider, and in a few years—that is, in 1925—he headed the list of winning jockeys. Then, however,_ he had a setback. In reducing bis weight to ride at Lincoln a couple of years ago he caught a chill, which had serious complications, and he was out of the saddle for- 46 weeks. He returned last season and carried all before-him. His, light weight has helped him, for a good jockey who can go to scale at 7.6 never lacks mounts. At the same time he can get as much out of a horsa* as men a stone heavier."

Shadowland is to be shipped to. Western Australia this week.

Dalmeny is booked to race in .Tasmania. and W. Kelsey is on the look-out for others to race in the same State. W. J. Tomkinson has left for Auckland with hia team for the Auckland Trotting Cup meeting. . Jewel Pointer' is again showing signs of lameness.

J. J. Kennerley’s team for Auckland will be Peter Bingen, Raima, The Shrew, Vandome, and Cornelian. Followers of the light harness sport will have' plenty to engage their attention next week with the Gore and Ashburton Trotting Clubs’ meetings on Boxing Day, to be followed by the Winton Trotting Club's meeting on the 28th. Then come events on .the cards at Waikouaiti, Wyndham, and Invercargill.' The particulars not having been supplied regarding. Marvin Patch, his handicap for the trotting events at the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s meeting were withheld. The information required has now been supplied to the handicapper, and Marvin '.Patch has been handicapped on the limit in the New Year Trot Handicap and also in the Dominion Trot Handicat).

Linkman seems to have freshened up a Rood deal during hia short spell (says '‘.Argus ”), and he will leave at the end of the week to race at the Auckland Trotting Club'a meeting. If Linkman is back to the form he was.showing about a month prior to the New Zealand Cup he may race well in the Auckland Cup. Peter Swift, whose death was reported at the last meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, con be numbered amongst the greatest trotters New Zealand has known, and one .of the few trotters able to compete with success against the pacers, big races in Wellington and Forbury Park coming his way. He bad got on to a bad mark when Mi* J. R. MTven/'e sold him in Tattersalls at a very low price. What Peter Swift died of is not known, but at the, time of _ his death he was in ideal condition, and it was thought he would be raced during the present season. The North Canterbury horseman (F. Price) intends to do a considerable amount of travelling during the Christmas holidays, and he will deserve all the success he'achieves. Ou Boxing Day (says ‘ Argus”) he will be engaged at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, after which he will take a team of six horses to the West Coast, some of which will race at the Inangahua meeting ou December 30. Price will return ou December •31 to Christchurch, and on January, 1 and 2 he will be busily engaged at the Canterbury Part meeting. A motor car °? of January 2 will land him at Hokitika in time to assist at the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting on January 3, after which he will take horses to weymouth for the meeting on January 4 and C. and Reef ton Jockey Club on January 7 and 8. The finish of a rather strenuous campaign will be at Timaru on th? 3 c s' c 5, u rapidly coming to the front as a first-class nder and driver, and the initiative he is showing in framing such mi extensive holiday programme is deserving of all the success that may come his way. }

TRACK WORK AT ELLERSLIE.

(Special to Daily Times.i AUCKLAND, December 19. _.^P art jV° m a f e ' v light showers the early conditions were excellent for training operations at Ellerslie this morning ]r e work was a little more interest--n ha f been of late . aithoupn nothing brilliant was recorded. The galloping was executed on the outside of the course proper the Hags being out about rrii ant ~ B om S was excellent. J he best gallop was recorded by Honour and Connax, who defeated Jaleux by a length over a round in 2min Oscc. They were fairly evenly weighted, and Corinav who covered a good deal of ground on the outside, went particularly wdl. Honour also pleased and was running on solidly at the end. The Railway Handicap candidate Vallar went nicely over five furlongs in Imin osec, and was travelling well at the finish \ allar s latest gallops have shown an improvement, and he has made some progress since Takapuna, although there is a doubt whether he is quite at his best just yet. Eager Rose reeled off five furlongs in

Imin 6 4-sgec, and Thursby alio did wait over the same ground in defeating Avoncourt in Imin 6 3-ssec.

Praise pleased over five furlongs, running the distance in Imin 6 l-Ssec. and comfortably holding Greenaway. Praise impresses by her bold style of galloping and looks the part of a good filly. Kawainga was better than War Officer over six furlongs in Imin 22sec. Kawainga ran a good race at Te. Awamutu, where she was not well ridden, and is a possibility for a hack handicap at the meeting. Tetrarchat'e dashed over four furlongs smartly in 50. 3-ssec.

Gemlight and Praetor went smoothly over half a mile in 52sec. Gemlight is a lazy worker and always does better in a race than on the track. He is 'an. improving young horse, and may race well at distances up to a mile at the meeting. Good Boy placed six furlongs behind in Imin 22sec, doing it well at the end, Hampton Park moved freely over three furlongs in 39 3-ssec, This colt is makirg steady progress and should, perform creditably in the juvenile handicaps. He showed considerable gameness in winning at big first start, and promises to be at least useful.' '

Currajong, who ; has made rapid' progress since meeting with . what - appeared to be a very serious accident some weeks ago, showed a clean pair of .heels to Thunderstorm over four furlongs in 53sec. Some Lady was responsible for a useful effort in running six furlongs in Imin 23 2-ssec; and_ Diamond Queen beat Bizarro and Kainiri over seven furlongs in Imin 37sec. Diamond Queen is lit, but may find the class at the summer meeting too difficult. Richfield easily defeated Wild Country over four furlongs in 53sec, and could have done better, for he was going comfortably at the end. Gay Cockade sprinted five furlongs in Imin 7 l-ssec, while "Lady’s Boy and Taneriri covered a mile in Imin 62 l-seec. Lady’s Boy is in great heartland is likely to . race well. His latest form has been consistently good. There were several gallops on-the No. 3 grass, and the best of these was a round by Cynthia N in Imin 42sec, the last six furlongs in Imin 19-3-ssec. Arrivals by the special train this morning were Historic, Panther, King Midas, Count Palatine, Tenterden; Ver tiger n, Paquito. Dunraven, Great Star, Pedestal, Drastic, Open Cheque, Duellona, and Pangolin, and the trotters Purser; Acre, Lady Fan. Genuine, .and Royal Silk. Historic and Panther were taken "out to Avondale, where Historic will have the use of a plough track to work <m. . Reid found this track to the liking of the big fellow when he was here in" the spring,'and this evidently influenced him- to make his headquarters there. Paquito and Vertigern were out doing a little easy work after arrival and both look well, Paquito bearing a particularly well-seasoned'ap-pearance. E. Ludlow has been engaged ,to ride Vertigem in the Auckland Cup.
