SIGNALS IGNORED

CANADIAN BOAT FIRED ON. AMERICA EXPRESSES REGRET. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) ■WASHINGTON, December 13. The American Government, in a Note to Canada, expresses regret for the firing by a coastguard boat on the Canadian vessel Shawnee on September 11 off New York Harbour. The communication which was handed to the Minister (Mr Vincent Massey), was in reply to a request by Canada for information concerning the incident. The apology contained the admission that the firing had been without legal authority. Reviewing the incident, the communication charged the Shawnee with being engaged in smuggling liquor and being built especially to violate the American laws. The coastguard came upon the Shawnee some 15 miles off the nearest land, and after the vessel had ignored the signals, the patrol fired live shell? into her. The Shawnee escaped.
