TRIAL BY JURY
MOVEMENT FOR ABOLITION. BILL PASSED IN TASMANIA. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) HOBART, December 15, (Received Dec, 15, at 5.5 p.m.) The Legislative Council passed a Bill to abolish trial by jury in criminal cases. Two judges are provided for instead, and a Criminal Court of Appeal will be created. Trial by jury has long been regarded as unsatisfactory, and acquittals in some instances have been so flagrant that the authorities have been discouraged, declaring that there is little use in tracking down offenders.
