A DARING SWINDLE
SYDNEY BANK LOSES £SOOO. FORGED WARRANT PRESENTED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 14. A daring swindle was perpetrated by two men at a cost of £SOOO to the Australian Bank of Commerce. This bank received a telephone message from the National Bank asking for £SOOO in notes. Ten minutes later two men'arrived with a National Bank warrant authorising payment to them. The money was paid out, and the men left without hindrance. Hours later the National Bank received the warrant in the usual exchanges. The signatures were forgeries, and they refused to “0.K.” the document. swindle was then discovered. How the thieves secured the official stamp la a mystery.
