(FSOU Oca Own CoEBESPOjmEJST.) TAPANUI, December 8. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr W. R. Quin), Councillors M’Donald, Naylor, Beattie, Wright, and Edgar. Ah apology for non-attendance was received from Or Duff. * CORRESPONDENCE, ylie Bros, applied for permission to erect, a kerbside pump jn front of their garage on the same conditions as their other pumps.—Granted. A Keir -applied for a supply of water to his section outside the borough boundary.—Granted under the usual conditions. . The Southland Electric Power Board, Invercargill, wrote notifying that an additional 10 percent, would be added to all rates for the year ending 31st March, 1930, remaining unpaid at the expiration of six months and 14 days from the date of remand.—Received. The returning officer for the Southlamf Electric Power Board’s combined districts of Gore, Mataura, and Tapanui Boroughs, and Wyndham Town Board wrote advising that Mr E, S. Lange had resigned from the board, and that a meeting of local authorities interested would be held in Gore on Friday, December 13, for the purpose of appointing some qualified person in his stead.—The town clerk was appointed to represent the council. T. M. Hall, chairman. No. 17 District Highways Council, forwarded details of items covering main highways construction for the year 1929-30 as under:— M’Nab-Edievale t Edgar's culvert, £SOO (£2 for £1).; Waikaka-Matheson’s Comer, via Kelso-Pomahaka River Bridge, £896 (£2 for £1) ; nui (Conical Hill road), £SOO (£1 for £1). GENERAL. ' . It was resolved that the dog tax be fixed at the sama rate as last year—viz-, 10s and 2s 6d per dog. . The town clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the supply of gravel for the incoming year. The following tenders were received for laying down approximately six chains of concrete footpath in Bushy Hill street: — L. D. Nicol, £l7 7s 6d per chain; A. S. Edgar, £l4 9s 6d pfcr chain; Thomas Edghr, £l3 per chain. The lowest tender, that of Thomas Edgar, was accepted, with the proviso that the work was to be completed by the end of January. It was decided that tenders be called for kerbing and channelling of 10 chains of footpath from Mr Frank Wylie’s comer, and the completing of the work in Northumberland street to Mr Mr.C. Smith’s corner.. The Works Committee was ..empowered to have a new body built for the borough dust cart. The Reserves Committee reported that with one exception all the gorse fences had been cut. —It was resolved that the lessee, who had failed to cut his .gorse in terms of Ms lease, be.notified.to,do so immediately, otherwise- the council would do the work at his expense.. ■ Accounts amounting to £l2O were passed for payment M.U.1.0.0.F. The ordinary monthly meeting of .the Loyal Tapanui Lodge was held on Thursday evening, when N.G. Bro. A. J. Potts presided over a large attendance’ of members. An official visit was received from the officers arid members of Loyal. Waikaka Lodge, who attended in strong force. Visitors from Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, Dunedin, were also present. On behalf of the Tapanui Lodge, Bro. Potts heartily welcomed the visiting brethren, who assisted in, the initiation of a new member. . . The secretary was instructed to~ write to the district officers, asking that the past officers and purple degree meeting be held either at Waikaia or Tapanui in the near future. The nomination of officers for the ensuing six riionths, to be elected next lodge.night, were taken as follows: : G.H., Bro. A. J. Potts; N.G.,- Bro. R. Kirk; V.G., Bro. E Howat; .EJ3., Bro. R. Munyard. For the positions of warden and guardian a large number of nominations were received. P.G. Bfo. F. Lischner was nominated as a trustee to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of P.G; Bro. D. M'Coll Bro. A. J. Potts was presented with a set of carvers as a wedding present by members of . the lodge, P.G. Bro. J. L._ Wylie making the presentation and wishing both the recipient and Mrs Potts long life and happiness. ■ At .the conclusion of the Oddfellows’ toast, Bro. Potts suitably replied, thanking the members for their good wishes and handsome present.

After the usual toast had been honoured, KG. Bro. K Kelly, on behalf of the Waikaka Lodge, thanked the Tapanui members for the cordial welcome which had been extended to' them, and expressed the great pleasure it alwavs gave his lodge to visit Tapanui. Supper was dispensed, and a social hour spent in song and story, the evening closing with the singing of “ Auld Lang. Syne ” - BROOKSDALE SUBDIVISION, ' ■Mr E. S. Little, Government surveyor, and party, urho liave for the past seven weeks been engaged in surveying the Brooksdale estate, .which the Government recently purchased for closer settlement from Mr George Stuart, have completed their work, and left on Wednesday last for Dunedin. It is expected that the property will be liallotted for in January with the exception of the homestead - block, which it jp understood is to be sold by auction. . WHISKY GULLY. In connection with the application > made by- the Whisky Gully Reserve Committee for the inclusion of a small area adjoining the reserve, at the enrance to the gully, advice has been received from the Minister of Lands (Mr G. W. Forbes) that the lessee. Mrs Wood, has consented to surrender the small piece applied for. and that his department is arrangin'* ™,,iT? SSa IT SUrVey? and that «» iand would be then reserved for recreation purposes and form part of the new domain at the gully. On Wednesday last a working hoe was held and a start made with the erection ot swings, fireplaces, conveniences, etc. AGRICULTURE. v Mr J. K. Davies, instructor of agriculture, Gore, spent two days in tha district last week sowing down an area ot four acres m small grass plots, numicnng 400, on Mr K. Rodger’s property i-ius experiment is designed’ for the in'J’ 0 ? Lvegrass strain investigation, each plot being sown at the rate of 32*lb to the acre. The following strains of rvcgrass have been used:—Southland, Canleibury, South Canterbury, Waifarapa, Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bav, Sandon • Mamototo, and Marlborough,'. * THE WEATHER. Owing to the very wet weather experienced oyer the week-end all outdoor sports had to he abandoned.
