SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, November 14. MUCH-NEEDED RAIN. Cloudy, warm weather prevailed yesterday until after 4 pan., when there was a sudden shower of rain akin to a sub-tropical downpour. The rain splashed on the asphalt roadway like water from a tap, and then suddenly ceased, and the sun shone out. Vegetation of all kinds benefited bv the shower. Rain .clouds have been in evidence to-day also, but so far there has not been a repetition of yesterday’s downpour. PRICE OF PIGS. Quite. recently there has been a sharp revival in the pig industry, doubtless due to the operation of the subsidy stimulating export trade. Local bacon factories and other buyers are now offering 7*d to Sda pound for carcasses up to 160lh, and it is stated that even higher prices are to be obtained in the city. Sevenpence halfpenny works out at £5 for an animal weighing 1601 b—a price which compares very favourably with that ruling last year. Now that the Government subsidy is going to be withdrawn, however, pic gi-owers would do well to be cautious, and not build too high hopes on the future ot the market. ' PERSONAL. Mrs J. H. Stevenson, of Balclutha, returned this week from a visit to Scotland. She was met n> Sydney by Mr Stevenson, and they travelled "home on the Manuka. Mr Stevenson, speaking as a business man, was much impressed with the briskness of Sydney and the amount of new building going on. but at the same time there was no disguising the fact that there was a good deal of unemployment. He was greatly impressed with the size of the bridge over the harbour from the city to North Sydney. which is quite the biggest thing in bridge building in the Southern Hemisphere.
