SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

CAVERSHAM. The monthly meeting of the Caveraham School Committee was held on Monday evening and was attended by Messrs Brown (chair), Todd, White, Allen, Clarke, and Reid. The Carnival Executive reported the appointment of the following as trustees of the Carnival Trust Account:—Messrs R. Grimmett (ExPupils’ Association) D. MTherson (Carnival. Executive). T. A. Brown, and J C. White (School Committee). It was decided to canvass the district on behalf of the annual prize-giving fund, and to circularise parents and friends prior to the canvass. The chairman and secretary were appointed a deputation to wait on the Minister of _ Railways (Mr W. B. Taverner) regarding the renting of property adjoining the school, to be used as janitor’s residence. The headmaster’s report showed a roll number of 780, with the average attendance 741. The savings bank deposits amounted to £312 3s 6d, and withdrawals £7O Bs. Arrangements for the annual choir concert were reported to be well in hand. ANDERSON’S BAY. The monthly meeting of the Anderson’s Bay School Committee was held on Wednesday night, Mr N. W. M'Lean presiding. The headmaster, Mr Parr, reported on tHe work of the school for tne past month. The attendance was about the usual, and the health of the children was excellent. The chairman made feeling reference to the death of Miss Gibb, one of the teachers,' which cast quite a- gloom over the district. The school had been rather unfortunate this year, as several of the staff had had to cease teaching on account of ill-health, and appreciation was expressed of the headmaster’s services during a very difficult and strenuous period. The playground required top-dressing and in places asphalting, and it was decided to write to the hoard with the view of having this matter attended to. The Education Board wrote notifying that Miss Green had been appointed infant mistress in place of Miss Graham (resigned). and would commence her duties on February 4. 1930. ST. CLAIR. The monthly meeting of the St. Clair School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. There were present: Messrs Halliday (in the chair). Priest, Kindley, Ritchie,- Pritchard, Macassey and Pastier. Correspondence' was received from the St. Clair Lawn Tennis Club apologising for the thoughtlessness of members in climbing the fence and gates on school properly, and enclosing a copy of a letter sent to menjjers, drawing attention to their obligations. The club applied for two new courts. The secretary was instructed to write to the Lawn Tennis Club offering the two extra courts at a rental of £2 10s per court, with the proviso that a netting wire> fence of at least 12 feet high be erected, with two Sates' to it. so that the children could ave easy access to the garden plots. The headmaster reported \that the average roll for October was 646 and the average attendance 606. Mr Hanning had been absent on leave from the Education Board for three weeks, and his place had been very satisfactorily filled b" Mr Murray. The cricket comnetitiom were resumed during the month. The A team won two matches and lost one; the B -team won two, and the C team won three matches. A lawn tennis club was started and a very large number of girls entered upon the game with enthusiasm. A baseball rounders club was formed for girls, and had won the opening match. The supply of first-aid material needed to be renewed and a cabinet procured to hang in the corridor. Mr Ritchie reported that be and Mr Halliday had visited the school that day and found the attendance good. The garden required a good deal of attention on account of much spoil lying on same after the contractors’ work on the gates and fence, and the rustic fence also required repairing. Certain parts of the asphalt would be much preserved if top-dressed during the Christmas holidays, One or two pegs on the tennis court would be better to have some protection in case of children tripping over them. The chairP. an ■ congratulated the headmaster and his staff on the excellent results achieved -at the bazaar, which bad realised. £BO, and asked the headmaster to convey congratulations to his staff and workers from the committee. Mr Pastier said he considered that it was the duty of every committeeman to give his whole-hearted support to the different functions run by the school. It was resolved that Mr hastier and the secretary be authorised to procure a first-aid equipment for the school. It was decided that the headm.a?t?L be authorised to spend in the vicinity of £3O on school prizes. The chairman (Mr Halliday) intimated that he intended giving, his usual donation of a medal for the best all-round athlete in the school.
