Telford, who trains and leases Phar Lap, is also a New Zealander. Louisson and the trainer (M'Caulcy) declined to yield to the criticism.

Mr Louisson to-day is a proud man. He declared that it was Ins ambition to win the Melbourne Cup, and money will not now buy Nightmarch.

The highest weight awarded to a three-year-old in the Melbourne Cup is B.C, which was the impost Aiirum carried into third place in the race of 1807. In the 69 contests for the Melbourne Cup that have eventuated to date only four mares have proved successful. The winners were:—Briseis. (by Tim Whiffler), Auraria (by Trenton), Acrasia (by Gpzo), and Sister Olive (bv Red Dennis).

Five New Zealand-bred horses have won the cup, viz., Martini-Henry (1883), Carbine (1890), Apologue (1907), Sasanof (191 G), Nightmarch (1920).
