OPIUM'‘POUND ON STE AMER. CONCEALED IN CONCRETE BED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) ■ • SYDNEY, September 26. Two hundred and seventy-six tins of opium, valued at about £3OOO, were discovered by Customs officers in a secret cupboard aboard the steamer Tanda, lying at Woolloomooloo Bay. The illegal cargo,. which was concealed in a concrete bed in a linen .chest, is one of the largest hauls for many years. YOUTH FATALLY SHOT. , \ STRUGGLE WITH, CONSTABLE. SYDNEY, September 26. In a desperate struggle with a constable, Thomas Aiken, aged 19, one of the two youths who escaped from Lithgow lockup, a week ago, was fatally shot on Rooty Hill last night. Constable Bartlett discovered Aiken in a relative’s house. The, fugitive made off in the scrub and the constable followed, but Aiken turned on his pfirsuer and gained a stianglehold on him. The constable then drew his revolver and fired, Aiken being mortally ■wounded in the chest. 1 A MAGISTRATE PINED. TAX RETURNS NOT SUPPLIED. BRISBANE, September 26. At the Summons Court Robert Dunpolice magistrate, was fined £24 for having failed to’, supply income tax returns.
