CLYDESDALE CHAMPIONS.

ANNUAL STALLIQN PARADE. A SUCCESSFUL SHOW. DESIRE WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP. \ ■_ . % Horiours were well distributed at the forty-sixth annual horse parade of the Otago A. and P. Society at Tahuna Park yesterday. Both the champion, Mr Andrew Grant’s Desire and the reserve champion, Mr Alexander Cjillens Ray of Hope, had previously won the Wright, Stephenson Perpetual Challenge Cup (value 75 guineas), so that the trophy went to Mr John Youngjs Brimstane Duplicate. There was a fine bunch paraued in the section for four-year-olds, and the judges found the task of selecting three prizewinners to ,be none too easy. -Finally they asked the society to award five prizes, a course which was agreed to, with the; result that the prize list contains that unusual number of awards. , Weather conditions were perfect for the parade, and the arrangements made beforehand by/ the secretary (Mr E. P. Duthie) were such that the day’s programme was carried through in. excellent time, and withouut the slightest hitch. Mr Duthie was assisted by an energetic band of class stewards, who kept the rings full all the time. But although all concerned carried out. their various duties well, the services, of the late Mr John Nimmo, 'than whom no member of the society was more keenly or' consistently interested in this exhibition, were sadly missed. " The judges were Messrs W. A, Doak (Wakanui, Ashburton) and D. M'Clure (Christchurch). The stewards were Messrs T. J. Gawn, J. W. Blair, and D. Andrew, and the Horse Committee was as follows:—Messrs James Gow, J. W. Blair, T. J. Gawn, John Young, and D. Andrew. A change was made from the usual routine this year in .that it was arranged, for the convenience of exhibitors to have the horses examined,by-the Government veterinarians on the ground on the morning of the show. This examination was clirried out at 8.30, and the Judging commenced punctually at 11. ’

FOUR-YEAR-OLDS AND OVER.

The entry in the class for stallions four years and over was a good one—too good for the judges, in fact, as they compromised in the matter of secondary awards by asking the society to award extra prizes." Mr Andrew Grant (Fairlie) won this section and the championship with his dark roan Desire, a flve-and-a-half-year-old imported from Britain when just over'three years old. He is by Carraridale out of Grange Darling, and was bred by Mr John Brough, of Brampton, Cumberland. ■ Desire has improved remarkably in the past two years or so. The defects which obtruded themselves when h'e was a junior four-year-old have disappeared. He has quite outgrown these irregularities, and his appearance yesterday was in marked contrast to his dejected demeanour two years ago, when , he made his debut at Tahuna Park, suffering from a severe cold.' - One thing alone unbecomes him — his colour. Roans are becoming just too common for the peace of mind of lovers of the heavy breed. Kay of Hope, by Dunure Ernest, out of Nancy of Balgray Mains, exhibited by Mr Alexander Cullen, Goodwood, matle a great impression. He' is, in spite Of his colour —roan again—a very presentable, and true to type entire. He handles well, land is particularly, good at the ground. His sixth year finds him better than ever. He has fine ■. legs, plepty of ankle, and is a good mover. In short; he is a horse of quality. Ray of Hope was bred by Mr James A. Barr, Balgray Mains, Newton Mains, Scotland. ‘ < a Mr John Young’s (Allanton) Brunstone Duplicate, an imported five-year-old by that great sire Dunmure Footprint, out of Marseillaise, took third place. He was Wed by Mr Robert Park, Brunstone, Portobcllo, Scotland, and was brought out to New Zealand by Mr Young two years and a-hnlf ago. Brunstone Duplicate has secured a place in the horse parade on- two previous occasions, being third last ypaw in the aged class and fourth the year.before as a three-year-old. Last year lie was beaten by Desire and Ray of Hope, but the litter was then placed ahead of the. Corrandalo horse.; Brunstone Dupli-« cate, by the ineligibility of the' first and second ,■ prize winners, annexed the. Wright, Stephenson Perpetual Challenge Cup. Strangely enough , Brunstone, Duplicate-is also a roan of a kind,.but his colour does not in any way detract from a fine, well set-up frame and a, head full of masculinity arid character'; He is a handsome-looking specimen, and already has proved himself as, a breeder of worth. . • Both Balmedie'Monarch (Mr J. : M. Smith, Kokonui) and Golden Knight (Messrs Coubrough and • Hamilton, Kelso) who filled fourth and fifth places" respectively,' are well known competitors, at-Tahuna, Park’apd at provincial shows. The judges paid them a -rare tribute by asking for the provision of extra awards. . Winners of the Wright, Stephenson Cup during the past few years have been as follow: 1924.—Messrs Thomson’s, Ltd, (Wairongoa) Scotland’s Victor. 1025. —Mr A. CarrutherS’s (Ngapuna) Medrox Print. 1926. Mr A. Cullen’s (Goodwood) Ray of Hope. 1927. —Mr ..Thomas Logan’s (Otama) Archaic. 1928. —Mr A. Grant’s (Fairlie) 1929. J. Young’s (Allanton) Brunstane Duplicate. *~ THE YOUNGSTERS. There was only a comparatively small entry in the class for three-year-olds, five animals facing ihe judges. The red ticket winner was a' rather small hut very shapely characteristic bay, M’Quaid of Ochrartyre, by Craigie M‘Quaid out of Craigie Baroness. He is an imported horse and is now the property of Mr John Young, of Allanton, He is an upstanding colt of great promise and should be heard of again. Close in the running for first place was Mr A. Wilson’s (Henley) Bridgebank Freestcp, by the imported sire Bridgebauk Chancellor and out of the . imported mare Minnie Park. He was bred by Mr Wilson, and won the first prize for two year-olds at last year’s parade. Another horse by the same sire out of the imported mare Elsie Paterson, also bred by Mr -Wilson annexed the third award for him, Royal Risque, by Risque out of Fabric’s Queen, bred at Wairongoa by Messrs Thomsons, Ltd., and no stranger at Tahuna Park filled fourth ■ place. The two-year-old section was very dis- . appointing, there being only three entries, but there was little cause for complaint on the score of quality. Mr Alex Thomson (Kelso) exhibited a wellgrown and rangy colt, Great Count, which far outshone his companions for size, and had little difficulty in taking the first prize. He is a splendid black by Rosencraig out of Camperdown ■ Countess, and was bred /by the exhibitor. Mr Thomas Logan, of Otama, demonstrated the value of his noted sire, Archaic, qs a breeder by showing a son of his'which did him credit. He is out of Mossdale Queen,' and besides showing good quality bone, has excellent feet, which are replicas of those of his father. Mr James Rennie Patrick

(Willowbrldge) took third prize with an unnamed colt by Fyvie Baronet, out of a mare by Topline. There wara better showing of yearlings, and there was among them an even; ness of quality that rather puzzled .the judges for some time. Bosendale, a nice-looking bay, with' colour and sub- / stance, .had also a nice supply of.bone" and gopd feet to recommend him, and he was eventually sorted out to occupy first place. He should make N a fine sire in a few years. He is by Rosencraig, out of Waterside Ruby, and is the property of Mr 'Alex. Thomson, who bred him. An unnamed Brilliantshine colt out of Bessie Brilliant brought back tp spectators at the ringside recollections of a great sire, who was always a. joy to the. eye. Messrs Thomsons, Ltd., have preserved some of his best characteristics in the youngster that took second prize in - this' class. Another son of Archaic did the great black sire extreme credit and incidentally annexed the third prize for Mr Thomas Logan. . ‘ ! DETAILED RESULTS.
